I like this building a lot but I wish it wasn't situated at this location. It doesn't have to be so tall either but it's still the one of the best of a bad bunch going up in the next few years.

More importantly what would Tony Stark say???

Why does everyone hate One57? Am I a minority for actually liking the design? Anyways, when can we expect this tower (icon or not) to reach street level?

Desingwise, one57 is the best looking skyscraper constructed in the last few years, imo

But if you want to talk residential, prices are only falling at the top of the market, nor are the affluent leaving New York, but rather the middle.
What is it with you goobers hating on mid-20th century architecture? Those "boxes" are a hell of a lot nicer looking than a solid 50-60% of the trash going up all over the country at the moment. Half the crap built today is covered in cheap wavy glass, has ugly asymmetrical window patterns, has some pointless slice running right through the middle of the facade, and/or is covered in hideous bulging tumors. Among other terrible aesthetic features.

Id prefer a Chase Manhattan Plaza or 277 Park Avenue over a 23 Park Row or a 281 Fifth Avenue any day of the week. Making something look different just for the sake of difference improves nothing.

I can find an equal number of good and bad examples examples of modern architecture going up right now as I can find with the same with postmodern and mid 20th century modernist architecture. The only exception being Brutalism, which always looks bad.

Is real earth often revealed in midtown Manhattan?

Come to think of it, is there a thread here that deals with below ground NYC infrastructure? The mind boggles at what lays just under that island.

That kind of stuff is every developer's nightmare over here.

"Good to see that excavation is in full swing on our €500 million mixed-use project."
"Yeah but we found an endangered species of beetle here, gotta resettle it."
"Damn."
"And in that corner we found some ancient Roman coins, there might be more."
"That's gonna set us back a bit."
"Yeah and over there is suspected to be a prehistoric burial site, possibly Neanderthal."
"For God's sake..."
"And next to where you stand, that's a British heavy bomb from WW2. Careful not to step on it."
"JESUS CHRIST!!"

Spring street in Lower Manhattan got its name because it had freshwater springs and streams running underneath it. Now it's just subway tunnels underneath SoHo

Actually, the spring still streams under Spring Street.
