Transbay in SF will be the first, but I think it's pretty hard to make that look good, when I hear "cage" on top of a tower I think of the old WTC plan which was just awful

Good examples but all they do is drive home how shitty cages look. If they are going to fake it I hope it is seamless like Shanghai Tower.

I was messing around in Google Earth... and it seems like Guangzhou Chow Tai Fook, Shanghai WFC, and even Ping An would fit on the block... but obviously they'd never meet FAR. It would be nice imagining though... also the Hyatt's gotta go. Trump owns it and has shown willingness to built supertalls before (NYSE Tower, Television City) so maybe the Trump world financial center...?

So we still don't know hot tall this tower would be?

I'm guessing between 1,100' and 1,350'.

my most optimistic guess is 1500 ft, but only if there is a tall crown and spire as shown in the early drawing. My only reasoning coming from awhile back when they wanted this tower to be as iconic as other towers around the world, which had significant heights.
what's clear is that there is no chance this won't be a supertall. RW's guess is more realistic

I agree, in that drawing it looks pretty tall, (comparing to the Chrysler on the right corner of it), so i think it might definatly be over 400m.

I just hope this is true for the roof as well, not just for the spire

I'd be shocked if it's 1, 500 feet tall. 1, 250 is the most realistic height.

I know, but he's probably right. NYC is a pretty practical town, especially for an office tower. I presume 1500 feet would be overkill to roof anyway. The meh was for the mediocre height of 1250 feet. I think its time NYC pushed the boundaries and aimed for a tower close to 500m, not another ESB scaled tower.

Such a tower needs to be make a statement and has to be at least WTC1s height AFAIC. Anything less is just another average supertall in the global scheme of things. In fact, 400m is probably the new standard for supertall IMO.

The first 1,500 ft tower proposed in the nabe was this Grand Central scheme from 1956:

nyguy at SSP

For a commercial office tower, 1,500 ft. seems much more realistic than for a residential. But NIMBYs are already foaming at the mouth about anything that blocks views of the Chrysler Building. So I'm not sure there's a developer willing to deal with that shitstorm when they can dial it back and get out of the ground more quickly. The classic maneuver is to propose a 1,500 footer and then "concede" 250 ft. to satisfy the critics (even though you only wanted to go 1,250 ft to begin with).

. 500m would be a perfect height to mark the area as NYs premier CBD.

That would be a sad wasted opportunity. The Chrysler was a new development at one point. I'm sure some people thought it would block the view of some other beloved tower at the time. Something landmark and futuristic needs to be by builit here, not some average design. The render is atrocious and if they go that way I'm going to seriously question NYs ambition in design.

BTW, I would have thought residential would be more likely to go higher than pure office.

clever. but 1250ft is still taller than Chrysler (except the spire perhaps).

As set forth in the following article from the 30 Sep 2013 WSJ, 1 Vanderbilt and 425 Park may grow due to the proposed rezoning.
