I doubt it will look like Disney unless they put up a massive Westin. Difference is what makes New York's skyline the most iconic in the world, so I'm looking for an iconic modern skyscraper to show the progression in New York since Chrysler and Empire were built.

Hopefully it will be one of those inspiring designs that usher in a new age of construction. It's hard to think of getting more modern that today, but it will happen.

As far as this tower, we'll just have to sit back and see what happens.

According to this recent rezoning it can't be over 400m right (esb height)? And that also only assuming developer will chose to build this after 2017 since this is the date when the new zone policy comes to live, do I get this right?

So if developer chose to start the project before 2017 what is the current possible top height they can go with?

The article on previous page. The rezoning involves allowing some plots for maximum FAR (Floor aspect ratio - whatever that means) of 30. And they also mentioned esb which has FAR 33. We would have to fully understand what that FAR means but if they compare this with esb I guess this marks the limit.

I hope they don't build that Shard-ish design. NYC should stick with simple designs or revive gothic style art-deco.

I actually wouldn't mind a Shard. I just hope it isn't another box.

I really hope this will be taller than the ESB. Otherwise it would be insignificant

So you don't want Torre Verre, 56 Leonard, 400 PAS, and The Hudson Yards built?

So does anybody know whats the current height limit for the plot? It will most likely be build before 2017 so the rezoning most likely won't affect this tower.

There is no height limit. There's a FAR limit. Anyway, if the zoning change happens, it will occur before Mayor Bloomberg leaves office -- not in 2017.

What would be the tallest tower possible with that FAR? ESB has pretty small floors height wise so these towers could easily go higher I would think

Well that's your opinion. A lot of us here would like to see NYC build radical organic ostentatious futuristic designs full of ornamentation and novelty.

There is NO REASON why this city SHOULD build only SIMPLE designs. NY is a mish-mash of all different styles. Again, there is no reason why complicated designs would not fit in with NYC. NYC should not stand still and limit itself to simple box or art-deco massing designs or it will become stagnant aesthetically, it must move with the times and continue to innovate.

I certainly don't want to see NYC limited to the usual box like designs or art-deco. If this happens, I'll turn my attention elsewhere because it would mean the end of architectural innovation in the city and turn NYC into a less interesting place. Gothic, Art-Deco, etc, are all fine, but NYC needs to have examples of futurism and organic architecture in its skyline to mark the 21st century.

1200-1500 ft is a more realistic estimate

Under the new zoning proposal, that FAR would be as of right. Air rights could still be transferred from nearby landmarked buildings to boost the height of new towers. In 1956 a 1,500 ft tall tower was proposed above GCT. So there's at least some history over here...
