Yeah, the "Sears-y" perspective is just a result of looking up from the East.

I'm having a hard time trying to articulate why the crown looks so much less refined from the East/West perspectives than from the North/South. I think it's that, from the North/South, all of the cascading setbacks are apparent, whereas from the East/West, you really only get one. And something to do with the proportion of the topmost section of the crown in relation to the rest. Maybe it would look better if it were thicker from the East/West perspective?

Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification. The second render with the close-up of the crown hadn't been up when I posted the link.

What is the 'new look' then that the YIMBY headline is talking about?

By "new look" they sometimes mean a new render and a new perspective.

Add another 100 feet to the roof and extend the spire. So 1,500' roof + 200' spire = 1,700'. The proportions will be much better then.

The words "feminine irrigation device" come to mind.

Back on topic: my only problem with this building is that the top "Sears Tower" part is too skinny. It looks tacked on.

I totally agree. It has nothing to do with making the building taller ( tho that would be nice) , it's about the aesthetics.
I'm still not a fan of the crown, I think stretching it along with the spire would do it for me, kinda like the render Funky posted a while ago with a longer crown.
Still a great looking tower tho.

I like the crown. It's unique for Manhattan and the potential for lighting is great.

It looks like the spire was stretched.

Yes, the crown as it is, is too scattered / busy for my taste. Also, it needs too loose some bulk. A taller spire would also do wonders here. It's one of those rare cases where I'm in favor of stretching the spire.

probably giving it an increase in height trimmed the bulk a bit.

You know dude, that would be awesome. Especially since it's really buried in midtown whereas the WTC has/had always been highly visible from the lower floors on up from a lot of angles, and the ESB is kind of isolated at the edge of midtown (for now). It would be cool if the city's tallest was sprouting from the middle of the forrest. But hey, this is still gonna be a pretty tall, pretty cool looking tree per say.
