They are building modern office stock, which is required as too much of the offices in nyc are aging. The towers they are building are quality enough for what the market desires. They really don't care about what China is building, they only care about what NY's market will bear. NY developers are focused on making money. fancy designs are expensive, especially with NY labor costs. So, no there is no pissing contest. China won the height contest anyway, no use in competing there.

^ I think many people here just want a true signature tower. With at least 7 towers over 400m by the end of the decade, a tower of 500 - 550m to the roof would suffice. And honestly, I do expect such a bold proposal in the near future. After all, Nordstrom's roof height is already 454m (maybe 472m).

Exactly!

it doesn't have to be 700 m..just a pinnacle for manhattan..not too fancy but special..as Î told before something comparable with 2 WTC (which is by far my favourite of the proposed / under construction building right now)

Strange. What's the point of this petition, exactly? Just to put pressure on the CB?

1 Vandy's crown and Chrysler's will look amazing when they're both illuminated at night.

This is new Yorkshire,s shard. It looks quite similar. Shard is better, but I like the crown on this more.

I agree, but for the tops, the tapering towers are very similar, though this is much taller.

apparently there was also a 'rectangular' version of the design.

Oh dear... I kind of prefer the squared-off version now that I've seen it.

I like the squared off version too but since there is no tapering, I would assume the building height would have been shortened with that version.

But as I said before, I really like the current look and would be happy with it. I like the setbacks at the top viewed from the North West.

I do like the bundled-box, Sears-Tower-esque design. But the current one is more unique.

I think the tapering will make it more unique in context with its neighbors. The rectangular version probably would have been too much of a 21st century Empire State Building for my tastes.
