Spire needs to be stretched out more IMO.

Maybe it's just the angle of the renders so far, as the crown doesn't look too bad in that last render, but I don't have my hopes up.
Sure. I once called it an upside down cow tit, and got a bit of a spanking for it. But I have to admit, in the VisualHouse 2030 render it does look pretty good.

this photo is dated back in February - note the lack of lights above the base. By now, most if not all of the tenants have vacated.

Apparently, the official name for this tower is:

1 Vanderbilt Avenue, not 1 Vanderbilt Place.

Like a little toothpick someone has stuck on top of a magnificent sculpture as a lazy way of cap-stoning. Something needs to be done about that twig spire.
Also, why is this render in such an out-dated photograph?

I was in the city throughout December and January. Even then signs were already up notifying pedestrians that businesses had relocated.

Most people here are fine with it.. sure it would be nice to tweak and make improvements but 1 Vanderbilt Avenue in anything close to its current rendering will be an absolute positive for the midtown East resurgence and skyline.

Agreed, a couple tweaks could make it an all-time great tower. But however it winds up, it's worth remembering that with the Vanderbilt Corridor rezoning now approved, there could be two or even three taller towers within four blocks... and that's without the greater Midtown East rezoning which, in its newly resurrected form, appears likely to pass this year.

Much like 432 Park, whether you think it's a gem or a dud, it's certainly going to have the company it needs sooner rather than later.

To be completely honest, BIG's 2 WTC design woudld probably work excellently here - but with the cantilevers hovering over Grand Central. I doubt SL Green will have the design tweaked much. They seem dead set on this being the flagship office tower of the new midtown east.

Maybe they'll tweak it to get some more height out of it.

It looks absolutely awful and far too simple. Like something a child could design. I would expect better from NYC. They need to add complication and abstraction, it is too clunky and literal a design as of now. However, I know most people here enjoy these banal corporate office towers despite their soul-crushing designs as long as they are nice and tall, so I won't expect you to agree. This is obviously not something that is being built to increase urban aesthetics, it is a pure bean-counter tower. I would love to take my piratey sabre to it and lop off a few of those edges and make that awkward massing flow in a pleasing way!

I like the the covers of the floorplates at the facede, it brakes the all glass monotony a bit.
But for me the plain sides with no setbacks and edges up till high hights, look sharp and cold.
I hope for a warmer design with more setbacks, and maybe some more of this corrugated material seen between the floors.
(One Grand Central Place is looking awesome in the background, it should be reminiscenced more.)

I LOVE the crown on 1 Vanderbilt! Classy, modern and elegant with a spice of Art Deco!

I hope they don't change anything about 1Vanderbilt at all. This is, together with the super-recent proposal for 60th street my absolutely favorite supertall project in NY right now... magnificent tower!
