So it appears Dongguan metro has been put into operation today UTC/yesterday Chinese time, a day earlier than expected. Now that line 2 is open, has line 1 started construction? It would be rare for a Chinese city not to have any new metro lines/extensions U/C, but it has recently happened in Wuxi, Jiangsu (between Shanghai and Nanjing).

Congratulation ! DongGuan Metro Line 2 opened !

Original posted by gdsy from DiTieZu
DongGuan Metro opened on 27th , May , 2016 . DongGuan became the fourth city in GuangDong province who has metro system
(the other three are GuangZhou , Shenzhen and Foshan).

The LOGO of DongGuan Metro . In my opinion , it looks like a horn .

These pics were taken in 28th,May (UTC+8). It's Saturday , so many people took a ride on DongGuan Metro with their families .

The strip map in the trains . At Humen Railway Sta. , the interchange with Guangzhou–Dongguan–Shenzhen Intercity Railway (U/C) and Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link are posted , giving a clear guidance to the passengers .
The dots screen shows the destination and other information .

Also , the interchange with Guangzhou–Shenzhen Railway posted on the strip map .

DongGuan Rail Transit Map . There 4 lines in the system and the Inner City Railway System are also included in the map (the gray lines) . Line 2 has opened , and Line 1 (blue) will be start U/C at the end of 2016 . And line 3 (orange) and Line 4 (Green) are still in plan .

Closer details of the map .

The map of line 2 on Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) . English option is available in all of the TVM in Chinese metro system . So it will be easy for foreigner to take metro systems .

The newly designed gates .

Some pics of stations .
东莞火车站

HaDi Sta. 蛤地

HongFu Rd. 鸿福路

XiPing Sta. 西平

XiaQiao Sta. 下桥

Liuhua Park 榴花公园

Then , the rolling stocks !

There are notches on the seats .Is this for definite the number of passengers on one bench ??

The priority seat and wheelchair area are at the end side of the carriage.

The TV broadcasting promotion video of DongGuan Rail Transit as well as showing the mins left for next train .Now 8 mins per train in the rush hour and 10 mins per train in the off peak .

Is was a rainy day in 28th , May . But the train looks more beautiful .

This pic shows us a good view of the curve tunnel .

It has a plan that DongGuan Line 1 (Planned) will interchange with Guangzhou Line 5 extension (Planned) . And Shenzhen Line 6 (U/C) also linked with DongGuan line 1 .
But actually its hard to know when three cities' metro system will be linked together . So just wait until our kids graduate form high school ?

Where in the Chinese Wikipedia? It currently states that construction on line 1 was to start in 2014 for an opening in 2019. Baike Baidu, which usually is more up to date, says line 1 is expected to start construction later this year with planned completion for 2020.

While it is certainly good news that Dongguan metro is opened, I don't really understand why things are so slow in Dongguan, considering it's one of the biggest cities in China. Other Chinese megacities are racing to be in world Top10 with their metro systems, and I've read that China is planning to lower the metro threshold from 3 million to 1.5 million inhabitants. With these in mind, Dongguan seems lagging behind, don't you agree?

Dongguan is not a conventional "city". It is a collection of townships if you will and its population is evenly spread out in a large area. For this reason the idea and pace of Dongguan's metro development have been a little different from the rest of the country.

It already struck me that Dongguan doesn't contain any districts (or counties, for that matter) like other cities, instead being a bunch of towns grouped under one 'city'. That would explain why Dongguan metro is planned to be extensive, without many lines or getting denser anywhere. BTW, the map they posted at stations is already outdated, since I've read they're planning 7 lines now.

Southern parts of Dongguan are also suburbs of Shenzhen and northern parts are suburbs of Guangzhou.

That depends on what "urban area" means. E.g. by Swedish standards it's all already one urban area from the HK border to Macau via Guangzhou.

And the metro construction drought in Dongguan ended after four months as line 1 started construction a few days ago. This line will initally span 58 km with 21 stations (from Mayong Xi, West, to Huangjiang Bei, North) when it opens in 2020, and then will be extended to meet with both Guangzhou and Shenzhen metros, forming a continuous network.

China shows us two things—one is a metro system in almost every town and city, another is interconnected metro systems. Both concepts are almost out of thinking in my country India. The Dongguan metro is such a metro system, situated in a smaller town—where it connects another metro system of neighboring town Shenzhen, which itself is also connected its neighboring metropolis Hong Kong. The line 2, which is the only metro line in Dongguan, is being extended in south, from Humen Railway Station, and in future, it will connect Shenzhen metro line 11. So it is not far away that a person could take a metro from Hongkong, then change to Shenzhen metro, then again change to Dongguan metro for a continuous long journey. I never heard such a long continuous metor system anywhere in the world.

I suggest they should introduce an express metro service, which will run between Hongkong and Dongguan, with limited stoppage, for quick traveling.

Here is a question, why they have constructed line 2 before line 1? Any special reason? Please write some details.

The logo of Dongguan metro is very good.

If line 2 was built first it may have been due to the fact line 1 and the Suidong-Dongguan-Shenzhen railway were proposed to share tracks.

And once again, how many times I'll have to say that line 2 and Shenzhen's line 11 aren't and were NEVER planned to be joined? Shenzhen's line 11 was planned to share tracks with the Suidong-Dongguan-Shenzhen railway instead, while (Dongguan's) line 2 will eventually link to Shenzhen's line 20.
