![]() Roman Baths – A place of intense socialization and cultural life, the remains of its artful mosiacs may still be seen. Until this day, only the eastern section has been excavated. The walls were decorated with frescoes, but unfortunately got torn down by British soldiers who built a temporary storage just before the end of the WW2. About 50 meters away in the area of Mertvilo necropolis, more similar objects were discovered, and if further archaeological excavations prove that all these were actually one Thermae, it would classify them as the largest Roman Thermae in Croatia. ![]() http://paiz-travel.com Last edited by Sanii; July 22nd, 2012 at 12:27 PM. |

Quote:
Actually Dalmatia has more roman heritage and tradition than Istria Salona, Split, Narona, Asseria, Zadar, Issa (Vis), Burnum etc. |

Cesarea, Israel
Herod the Great built a hippodrome along the coast at Caesarea Maritima in 10 B.C. to celebrate the opening of the city. In the second century A.D. the south side of the hippodrome was reconstructed as an amphitheater to be used for gladiatorial contests. New sections with beautiful frescoes have been uncovered.
This metal sculpture has been erected on the north end of the hippodrome along the beautiful Mediterranean. image hosted on flickr ![]() Caesarea by Frank K Lee, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Caesarea 23 by stevenconger@sbcglobal.net, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Caesarea 20 by stevenconger@sbcglobal.net, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Caesarea 19 by stevenconger@sbcglobal.net, on Flickr |
