Imperial apartments, Diocletians palace

image hosted on flickr

Untitled by onopko, on Flickr

In the southern half of palace are more luxurious structures; that is, the emperor's apartments, both public and private, and religious buildings. The emperor's apartments formed a block along the sea front and were situated above a substructure because the sloping terrain demanded significant differences in level.
Here you can see a central octagonal hall surrounded on three sides with rooms, and on the southernside with a large portico that spread from the very centre of the hall. Its function was ceremonial, and it can be considered that this was also true of the triclinium triumphale of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, one of the two imperial halls.

Maison Carrée, Nimes France

The Maison Carrée at Nîmes is one of the best preserved temples to be found anywhere in the territory of the former Roman Empire. It was built around 19 BC by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, who was also the original patron of the Pantheon in Rome. It was dedicated to his two sons, Caius Caesar and Lucius Caesar, adopted heirs of Augustus who both died young.

Temple of Diana?

The Temple of Diana (Temple de Diane) is a Roman site in Nimes whose ultimate purpose remains a mystery, as does the origin of its name. Believed by some to have been originally built sometime during the reign of Augustus - others say in the 2nd century - it has been suggested that the Temple of Diana may have been a library.

Whatever its original function, this stunning site boasts well-preserved vaulted ceilings, grand archways and enticing passageways. Apparently, the reason for its excellent state is that the Temple of Diana was used as a medieval church, only to be damaged in the Wars of Religion.
