Spinoff: What's the cheapest 3 bedroom apartment between Central Park & Downtown?

Let's start a thread that's actually useful to us here Particularly me, since I'm moving in June.

I have no idea but 3 bedroom doesn't come cheap.
and where exactly in Downtown? Do you mean from Chambers street, from the Village?

We were thinking somewhere in SoHo or the Village. This isn't unrelated to my commute question. I'll be living with a couple friends, two of us will be working in Midtown and the other Downtown. We're looking for short commutes and a nice neighborhood...

Because no one wants to share a bedroom.

We'll all be making pretty good money, I'm just looking to spend something under $1500 a month.

OK, here are some initial recommendations for the Broadway/Lafayette (Soho/East Village) area:

Avalon Chrystie Place: A swanky and expensive rental, currently under construction, to be completed before summer (I think).
http://www.avalonchrystieplace.com/home.html

SoHo Court: Lots of young bankers live here. You will also find attractive young ladies (mostly in publishing- Hearst, Conde Nast, Primedia, etc.). I know this building well.

If these buildings are out of your price range, I can come up with more affordable local options.

^ Those are a start. My buddy from school who's a first yearanalyst right now is probably going to be doing most of the legwork, and I'll be making at least a few trips to NYC by the end of spring...

I'd wonder if finding something in an older building would make it a bit cheaper, though.

Anyone know good websites for browsing apartments in NYC (perhaps ones that aren't limited to a particular realtor)?

If you want my thoughts on it, you will not find an on-the-market, vacated 3 bedroom apartment in Manhattan south of 125th street for $1500 a month. No way, no how. You might be able to slip into something rent controlled, but that would be a sublease or possibly 2 roommates moving in with someone you don't know. The only places where $1500 a month 3 bedrooms are easily available, with or without a fee, is probably Journal Square-Jersey City, Bushwick, maybe Long Island City or Washington Heights, and Sunset Park southeastward in Brooklyn.

I even think you'd be hard pressed to find a 3 bedroom for $2000 in midtown to Soho. I am not trying to dampen your spirits, but I would rethink the situation.

Or, do you mean $1500 each? as in 3 bedroom for $4500?

Yes. You can't find 3 bedroom for $1500 total in a good neighborhood here in Chicago...

you can too, my friends in wicker park have one.

now as for $4500 a month, you can probably do that. although you could get something for less in a nice area of brooklyn. or even your own 1-bedroom for under $1500 in brooklyn.

You can move to Los Angeles instead of NYC. Los Angeles have many 3 bedroom that under $3000. Los Angeles is popular city as NYC does.

NYC is better than LA in my opinion, and probably chi-town's too. They're diametrically opposed metropolitan areas. The differences are obvious.

Your opnion is right. NYC have lowest crime rate and less clogged traffic. Los Angeles have best climate, very modernstic subway/light rail and modern building. I like big mountain and hill though.

L.A. have very bad economy in early 1990s when Bush's father was president. It got better in late 1990s. Gas Price is skyrocketing than all cities in USA.

I could care less about how "popular" LA is. Chicago is a far superior city, and so is New York. And both are far better than LA for my chosen career (few investment banks have LA offices). And it doesn't matter how modern the subway is when all you've got is two short lines that can't get you around the city.

On another note... how expensive is Greenwich Village, relative to SoHo? I dig those crazy crooked streets west of Washington Square.

What would be a nice area of brooklyn? Not that I think about moving to New York. But I have only been to Manhatten so far and I would like to know what is beyond.
