Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios Review by http://www.frommers.com This restaurant's simulated nighttime sky is filled with fiber-optic twinkling stars that look down on you as you sit in a chrome "convertible" watching a giant screen showing '50s and '60s sci-fi flicks, zany newsreels, cartoons, and B-horror-movie clips, such as Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster. Fun-loving carhops deliver free popcorn along with your meal. I'm disappointed that the menu, which was almost as fun to read as the movies are to watch, is far less cosmic than it used to be. Entrees once listed as the Attack of the Killer Club Sandwich, the Beach Party Panic, and the Red Planet now require little translation as they sport names that are now far more down-to-earth (sure they're more recognizable, but the fun factor ain't there). The menu includes a selection of sandwiches, ribs, burgers, seafood, pasta, steak, and salads. Drinks are served with souvenir glow-in-the-dark ice cubes. The food is average; it's the atmosphere that keeps the crowds coming. Advance Reservations are highly recommended. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

Star Tours Fish eyed Attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios Text courtesy of Wikipedia Star Tours is a simulator ride located in several Disney theme parks, including Disneyland in California, Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland in Japan, and Disneyland Park in Paris. The ride is based on the successful Star Wars franchise of movies, created by George Lucas, making it the first of the park's attractions that did not use Disney-designed imagery. The first incarnation of the ride appeared in Tomorrowland at Disneyland in 1987, replacing the previous attraction, Adventure Thru Inner Space. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Star Tour II In April 2005, at the Star Wars Celebration III, Star Wars creator George Lucas confirmed that a Star Tours II was in production. In May 2009, /Film reported that filming for the new version of Star Tours was underway in West Hollywood, California. The flight information board utilized in the ride queue promises forthcoming adventures to Hoth, Tatooine, and Dagobah and displays the text "Soon Endor Won't Be The End-All". These details, especially the tagline, are often mistaken as recent additions, used to support rumors of impending changes to the attraction, but have actually been in place since Star Tours opened, as have advertisements to other planets; eg. Hoth. At the D23 Expo in Anaheim, it was announced that Star Tours at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios will close in October 2010 and re-open in 2011 as Star Tours II. The updated ride system will consist of a High Definition, Disney Real-D 3D screen, an improved motion simulator as well as several other special effects. A short teaser trailer was shown at the expo featuring a Podracing scene similar to that from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. An accompanying teaser picture depicted an orange-colored "StarSpeeder 1000" spacecraft. In May 2010, Disney announced exact dates for the closure of Star Tours at both parks, both earlier than the originally announced October 2010 date. Star Tours will close on July 27 at Disneyland and on September 7 at Disney's Hollywood Studios. On June 11, 2010 at the "What's Next?" presentation, Disney announced that the re-imagined new attraction will take place between episodes III and IV and be named Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. Disney also premiered a new image showcasing the StarSpeeder 1000 flying through Coruscant. . |

Disney Animatronics ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . . |

A Look Back- New Orleans Square, Disneyland Resort The footage you are about to see is bittersweet. It shows one of the last times Walt was on film enjoying his park. The day was 44 years ago, July 24, 1966 (Walt died later that year). Walt and New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro officially opened New Orleans Square. It was the first time since opening day in 1955 that a new land had opened. It was also the only area at the park named after a real city. Guests enjoyed shopping, dining and music, and Pirates of the Caribbean opened the following year. . |

New book takes a behind-the-dreams look at the way Walt Disney Imagineering really works today
Okay. Last week, JHM reviewed a new hardcover that would be the perfect graduation present for any artists and animators that are on your gift list. This time around, I'd like to talk up a book that would be a great selection for any would-be Imagineers you may have in your extended family. And that’s “Walt Disney Imagineering: A Behind the Dreams Look at Making More Magic Real” (Disney Editions, May 2010). I know, I know. There have been other books about WDI (1966's Walt Disney Imagineering: A Behind-the-Dreams Look at Making the Magic Real” comes immediately to mind). But given that the Imagineers have added a lot of new techniques & technologies to their repertoire over the past 14 years, the folks at Disney Editions felt it was high time to take another trip to 1401 Flower Street. ![]() Now what makes “Making More Magic Real” different from any earlier Imagineering book is that it talks in depth about all the Parks & projects that WDI tackled from 1996 right through to … Well, tomorrow. The endpaper for this book is actually a beautiful piece of concept art for DCA’s soon-to-be-opening show, Disney’s World of Color. Take – for example – Don Carson’s 1997 proposed design for Hong Kong Disneyland. Or – as this project was known back then – Disneyland Asia. What Don wanted to do was a pretty significant departure from what Imagineering had typically done with its Disneyland-type parks. ![]() One of the more intriguing aspects of Carson’s plan was this theme park’s castle. Which was going to be located at the very back of the Park, rather than right off the Hub. What Don wanted to do with this iconic structure wasn’t your usual walk-through attraction or restaurant. No, what Carson wanted to do with the Disneyland Asia castle was put a ride inside of it. A Disney Fairy tale-themed “Once Upon a Time” ride-thru attraction to be specific. Don also wanted this theme park’s Land of Fantasy (rather than Fantasyland) to go beyond the now-standard Alice in Wonderland-themed Mad Tea Party and Peter Pan's Flight. Carson wanted to include mini-lands within this part of that proposed theme park. So that Guests could stroll down a street in Agrabah, visit Belle’s village or even (if you dare) drop in on a den of Disney Villains. ![]() Obviously Disney management (at that time, anyway) wasn’t willing to go forward with something as radical as what Don Carson was proposing here. Perhaps cost or practicality factored into the Company’s decision to go forward with construction of a far more staid & traditional version of the Magic Kingdom for Hong Kong Disneyland. But that’s what makes paging through “Walt Disney Imagineering: A Behind the Dream Look at Making More Magic Real” so much fun. You get to see the early-early version of things. Take – for example – that autonomous walking platform, “Big Dino” … ![]() … Which was the predecessor for that acclaimed Living Character Initiative creation, Lucky the Dinosaur. Of course, the other aspect of this coffee table book that will make it wildly popular with theme park history buffs is that it gives you close-up looks at things that never quite made it off the drawing board. Like Disney World’s Future World Theme Center project from the mid-1970s. ![]() “And why didn’t that get built?,” you ask. Well, sometimes it’s because an idea that once seems quite promising to WDI eventually turns out to be problematic. Take – for example – the Lighthouse at Alexandria. Which was originally supposed to be the icon for Tokyo DisneySea. The Imagineers put months into designing this structure only to then step away from the idea due to capacity concerns (i.e. There was just no way that WDI could build a viewing platform at the top of this deliberately-aged-and-rickety looking structure that could then safely accommodate all of the TDL Resort Guests who would want to experience this attraction on a daily basis). ![]() his is why “Making More Magic Real” would be a great graduation gift for the would-be Imagineers on your shopping list. This 192-page hardcover talks about all the factors that WDI has to take into consideration whenever they’re designing & then building a brand-new ride, show and attraction for the Parks. You see, it isn’t all about cool ride systems and neat special effects. Imagineering also has to take into consideration things like Guest safety, hourly capacity, or whether a character or a storyline is actually a good fit for a particular ride system. Because when all of the right elements come together (i.e. the right character is tied to the right ride system which is then placed in the exact right spot inside of a particular Disney theme park), the end result really is magic. WDI can create the sort of Guest experience that people will talk about for weeks, months, even years after they’ve visited that park. Like that Walt Disney Studios Paris attraction they created which allows you to ride along with Crush as he and the other sea turtles from “Finding Nemo” were zooming through the E.A.C. ![]() That’s what makes “Even More Magic” different from all of the earlier Imagineering books out there. I mean, sure. You still get to see some spectacular artwork from WDI’s research library (Take – for example – this concept painting that Disney Legend Ken Anderson created. Which showed how the scary trees from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” could be translated / transformed for a theme park setting) … ![]() … But this hardcover takes a much more practical approach to explaining how the modern version of Walt Disney Imagineering works. How the many arms of this division of The Walt Disney Company come together, using their specific talents & disciplines to create new rides, shows and attractions that people around the globe can enjoy. So if you’ve got a recent college or high school graduate who’s interested in working for WDI someday, do them a favor and get them a copy of “Walt Disney Imagineering: A Behind the Dream Look at Making More Magic Real.” Which should give them a very good sense of how the modern version of Imagineering actually works. Disneyland Paris officially announces its will to build a third Theme park – Edited 9/15 with more details and renderings ![]() Disneyland Paris officially announced today that the agreement signed with the french government - which was supposed to end in 2017 - will be extend until 2030 as well as new investment with partners for an amount which could be as high as 8 Billion euros AND their will to build a third theme park. This extension of the agreement will be signed this tuesday afternoon. Before you get too excited about this official announcement, let's have a look to what this really means: First the whole site area will be extend from 1.943 to 2.230 hectares. The park will build in partnership with Pierre & Vacances Co a new leisure village called "Villages Nature of Val d'Europe", which is nothing new as it was announced many years ago but you'll be happy to know that these Villages will include a water park on which WDI Imagineers worked on the design - but no, it won't be, unfortunately, the original Lava Lagoon project. However it seems that the investment for this Village will be around 1.8 Billion euros, with first part delivered in 2015. Something else, and more new in the new convention talks about the building of 10000 housing as well as new infrastructures for this new area. Edited 9/15: What will be the "Villages Nature"? Here is more about it from the Val d'Europe web site, including renderings. As you will see, for a big part, the Villages will be surrounded by water: "Villages Nature is an ecotourism project, the concept of which is based on the search for harmony between Man and Nature. The first of its kind in Europe, this project could be adapted to each of the planet’s four elements (water, earth, air and fire). Developed over a 15 to 20-year period, its surface area would reach 530 hectares, of which only 10% would be built upon." Below, the first Blue Sky concept-arts and master-plan of the project: ![]() ![]() ![]() "A letter of intent for this project, which could ultimately generate up to 9,000 direct and indirect jobs, was signed on February 13th, 2007. Developed in partnership with the Pierre & Vacances Group, it aims to be exemplary in terms of reducing ecological footprints: waste management, water recycling, geothermal exploitation, car-free environment, use of sustainable materials and more." "As the feasibility studies proceed, we find ourselves dreaming about the idea of enjoying a few days in one of the future Villages Nature ... an opportunity to breathe, recharge our batteries and expend our energy within the very depths of nature." Below, a part of the latest master plan revealed in an official presentation of the project, June 25th 2010: ![]() As you probably already understood they're talking here more about a huge real estate project than anything else. Still, they also confirmed their intention to build a third theme park but faithful Disney and more readers may have noticed that i've told you almost one year ago that the park was indeed working on a third gate with an opening envisioned at the end of the decade...if everything goes well. Of course the main reason of this real estate project is to bring euros in the cash drawer, which the park needs desperately. In two words, they're probably making more money now out of the real estate operations than from the resort - i mean, at least in terms of profit on investment. Still, the park also announced that the resort is now the fifth hotel group in France and that DLRP is now making alone 6,4% of the whole french tourism earnings, which is not bad at all. Edited 9/15: Just like you i would have prefer more details about this third theme park and they are coming today with this big news revealed today by The Telegraph and it's about what could be the theme of the third theme park! As the info is coming from Philippe Gas DLP's CEO himself this one can be considered as not a rumor, and guess what? the 3rd theme park could be a Marvel super-heroes park!: "In the latest deal with the French government, the deadline by which Euro Disney would have to develop the land has been extended from 2017 to 2030, to provide the time needed to construct a third theme park. Philippe Gas, the chief executive of Euro Disney, said one idea for a third park is "a superheroes park" following the acquisition of Marvel by Disney - although the construction of a third park is a long-term vision. Mr Gas said there is a possibility that a decision to build a third park could come as late as 2020, although it may come earlier if planned work on the Disney Studios park is completed." As the 3rd park opening won't happen before ten years from now its concept and its theme may change. However, it's good to know "officially" that a third gate is always in DLP plans, let's just hope they will sell quickly as many as possible of the 10000 apartments as this should be helpful to finance the third theme park! So, what is your opinion about having a Marvel super-heroes park at DLP? Let me know in the comments, and don't miss the part two of this article showing how could look a park in tribute to Marvel Super-Heroes! Below, DLP's official corporate release about yesterday's agreement: Renewed Momentum for the Partnership between Euro Disney and the French Public Parties - Signature of an Amendment to the Main Agreement of March 24, 1987 (Marne-la-Vallée, September 14, 2010) Euro Disney S.C.A. (the "Company"), parent company of Euro Disney Associés S.C.A, operator of Disneyland® Paris, announced that it will sign this afternoon an Amendment to the Main Agreement of March 24, 1987 which created Euro Disneyland in France (the "Main Agreement"), with the French State, the Ile-de-France Région, the Seine-et-Marne Département, and the Etablissement Public d’Aménagement de Marne-la-Vallée (the "Amendment"). This Amendment will represent a new phase in the existing partnership between the Euro Disney group (the "Group") and the French Public Parties that for the past twenty years has driven the development of sector IV of Marne-la-Vallée with Disneyland Paris, Europe’s number one tourist destination, as well as the urban and economic hub of Val d’Europe. The Amendment reinforces the ongoing significant and growing contributions of the Group to France’s draw as a tourist destination, as well as the creation of added value to the French economy, creation of both direct and indirect jobs, and to support the re-balancing of the Ile-de-France region toward the East, as was highlighted in the Economic Impact Study published in December 2009 by the French Inter-ministerial Delegate to the Euro Disney project. This Amendment to the Main Agreement, which takes place in the context of a Project of General Interest (in French, Projet d’Intérêt Général), allows the signatories: • To pursue the development of the tourist destination for hotel and theme park activity, including notably the right to build a third theme park in the long term thereby continuing to enhance the attractiveness of Disneyland Paris and reflecting its support of France as a leader in tourism. • To pursue the urban development of Val d’Europe to facilitate a rebalancing of economic growth and job creation in the eastern part of the Ile-de-France region, which encompasses new housing development as envisioned by the Ile-de-France Region Planning (in French, Schéma Directeur de la Région Ile-de-France). • To develop a new tourism project, “Les Villages Nature de Val d’Europe”, based on sustainable development. The project will be in partnership with the Pierre & Vacances Group via a joint venture that is a signatory to the Amendment. This project, which will be launched depending on market conditions, would be developed in phases up to approximately 500 hectares within a 20-year timeframe. To facilitate the vision for future growth outlined by the Amendment, the perimeter of the Main Agreement has been modified from 1,943 to 2,230 hectares. Similarly, the parties have agreed to change the end date of the Main Agreement from 2017 to 2030. Between now and 2030, and as estimated by the French State projects within the new perimeter could generate an approximate investment of € 8 billion by various tourist and urban developers, including € 1.8 billion for Les Villages Nature de Val d’Europe, most of which will be made by individual and/or institutional investors, and a potential of 70,000 directs and indirect jobs. The Amendment establishes certain key principles for a balanced and sustainable development and commits the Public Parties to certain improvements and additional infrastructure in terms of road access and public transportation both within the land covered by the Main Agreement and elsewhere in Seine-et-Marne. Philippe Gas, C.E.O. of Euro Disney S.A.S., stated “With this Amendment to the Main Agreement to be signed with the French public parties, we are renewing our collective confidence in the future of Disneyland Paris. For over twenty years, this model has brought sustained growth to the region, while ensuring a close relationship with our public partners and neighbouring communities. We are committed to continue developing our tourist destination and supporting France’s tourism leadership, while addressing the challenges of sustainable development.” ![]() Source: http://disneyandmore.blogspot.com/20...intention.html . |
