Hi, I will reach Dar es Salaam and I will stay there one week, then I'd like to reach Mombasa by bus. Is it easy? Are there good buses? How many hours will I need to reach Mombasa? Thanks

From Dar to Arusha is 9 hours, then Arusha to Nairobi is 4 hours, from Nairobi to Mombasa is like 8 hours(need confirmation) The roads are smooth and in very good condition, you will need to break off in Nairobi though, or you may book an overnight bus. Good luck.

What? I don't need reach Nairobi. I have to reach Mombasa only, but if Arusha is 9 hours it is impossible Mombasa is 8 hours. The road is half than Arusha.

The road from Dar es Salaam to Tanga is very good and smooth. Tanga is near the Kenya border on the way to Arusha. The road from Tanga to the Kenyan border is still under construction. However, there should be some decent spots by now. The road is 85% complete. It should be complete by the end of the year.

There are bus companies which go from Dar to Mombasa but they tend to use refurbished older buses due to the historically poor state of the last stretch of the road. Some of these companies are Tahweel, and Tahmeed. They also tend to drive a bit faster than would make me feel very comfortable.

Here is a picture showing some of the good sections of the road from Tanga to the Kenya border. Oh, from the Kenya border to Mombasa the road is decent. Slightly rough but tarmaced.

A quick update. I looked around some more and it looks that the road is currently 95% complete.

yes from Dar to Tanga is 4 hours and Tanga to Mombasa is very close though i am not precise with time but i believe won't be more than 6 hrs in total for ur journey from Dar to Mombasa! Tanga to Horohoro (border between Kenya and Tanzania) is 65 km!

Why do I read different hours? Look here: http://www.scandinaviagroup.com/Scan...ia_darmba.html
May be is the train faster than bus?

what do u read different? the border is called Horohoro in TZ and Lungalunga in Kenya and distance from Tanga to Mombasa 171 km whereas from Dar to Tanga is 358 giving a total of 529 that can be covered in 6 hours if u travel at an average of 100 km/hr considering 95% of the road between Tanga and Lungalunga is finished! i don't think there is a train plying to Mombasa from Tanga though an old rail line exists!

Out of curiosity. II'd like to spo at Tanga for some days. If you know Tanga, can you tell me if in Tanga there is diversion? Are there many bars with music? Where they are precisely? Can you send me a private message please? I'd like to ask something. Thanks.

Yea, Tanga beach resolt, Sea Breeze, Mkonge Hotel, etc,
If you prefer public transport, Raha Leo or Simba bus company may be appropriate!

Wish you all the best, i'm not in Tanga, but i'ts my home town..

Raha Leo & Simba bus, if you want to travel from Tanga to Dar Es Salaam. It takes 4-5 hours.
the cost is around Tsh.10,000-12,000/= only!
