Afaik solar energy is not that cheap if you want to use it for something bigger than a lamp on daily basis, the supply is just not stable. There are days when you get more than you need and barely anything when it's cloudy which wouldn't be that much of a problem if you could just store the energy which is still pretty complicated and expensive comparing with "traditional" energy sources such as coal.

May seem naive but how can investments make a return in this country?
Is NK becoming more 'free-market or something?

Since Kim-Jong Un came yes.
Ever wondered why he is on an execution spree on old guys? The closest guess is that he is executing officials against his reforms.

Communism is dead and even Nkoreans realize it now, I remember reading an article about a rising class of capitalists in pyongyang once.

Its away from a free market, but semi-legal private enterprises are on the rise.

Quote:
According to the most recent estimates, about 75 percent of North Korean household income now comes not from the state but from assorted private economic activities - activities that are now tacitly tolerated by the government.

This private economy is massive. Strictly speaking, most of these activities remain illegal under North Korean law, but the North Korean government is unable (and perhaps unwilling) to enforce many of the outdated rules and regulations.
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opi...439924471.html

Nevertheless, since Kim Jong Il (Un's father) the National Defense Commission (NDC) has the highest power, more than the Worker's Party (which is officially the highest instance).
The NDC consists of mostly old and extremely hardline Generals, who don't want an economic development. Instead, they want military and the threat of war, to keep their special position of power.

Kim Jong Un got rid of some of those hardline generals, but still even Kim can't allow himself to piss them off too much.
There is still a lot of distrust and internal power struggle between the NDC and Un.

The famous Koryo hotel in Pyongyang was burning a few days ago.

No one died according to reports. North Korean officials were trying to stop tourists from taking pictures, but somehow those two pics luckily made it.

keep in mind that this picture was taken by a tourist on an organised tour of pyongyang, so it could easily have been set up to give tourists the impression of wealth in the country.

No, there are quite a few nice cars in Pyongyang (Mercedes, etc), since this is where the elite class lives. I know, so communist, right?

I don't doubt that the elite political/military class has access to expensive foreign cars, that has always been the case for communist regimes.

There may be 'quite a few' nice cars in proportion to the number of cars on the road, but it is definitely disproportionately low regarding the population of Pyongyang.

Nope, The guys in Pyongyang are the wealthy that can afford vehicles. Since the Famine North Korea turned from the paradise into a real life Dystopia ruled by a few in a few livable cities(While the opposite happened in the South)

Department store & supermarket in Pyongyang.
More of those are appearing around the city in the last few years.

Pyongyang's first "luxury shopping centre" currently under construction, according to the source.

North Korea’s new airport to open July 1

Kim Jong Un reportedly very satisfied with the new Pyongyang terminal

North Korea announced that its new Pyongyang airport terminal will open July 1, according to report in the country’s state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper Thursday.

DPRK leader Kim Jong Un toured the new facilities, which include plush-looking restaurants, bars, cafes and shopping areas.

A similar article published by the Korean Central News Agency said Kim was “very satisfied to see the changes that he suggested were done in such a short amount of time and that he could find no fault with the airport.”

Images released by state media show a well-furnished facility apparently stocked with foreign goods, including candies, beverages and alcohol.

The North Korean leader also reportedly ordered the construction of transport infrastructure between Pyongyang and the new airport terminal, including a high-speed train and new highway.
