Question guys: does it seem like North Korea, or at least Pyongyang, is booming? Is it a bunch of Chinese investments to ready North Korea for an eventual opening? Please enlighten me thanks!

Haha nope. They just admitted to executing their defense chief finally. Although it may not have a bearing on whether or not NK opens up, it's still a bad mark. I don't see any financial gain in running the risk of being shot for sneezing the wrong direction.

There is still an internal power struggle going on in NK. Mostly its hardline Generals who are getting executed, who are against economic development.

The National Defense Commission (NDC) has the highest power since Kim Jong Il (Un's father), more than the Worker's Party (which should be officially the highest instance).
The NDC consists mostly of hardline Generals, who don't want economic development.
Instead, they want a powerful military and the threat of war, to keep their special position of power.

Kim Jong Un is getting more and more rid of those hardline generals, but still, even Kim can't allow himself to piss them off too much.
He has to walk a thin line between allowing slow economic development and maintaining enough support from his hardline Generals to not throw him over.

Anyway, as long as the NDC has absolute power and consists of hardline militarists there won't be any opening up or large economic reforms.

The financial gains have nothing to do with running the risk of being shot for sneezing the wrong direction. In fact, the harder a regime, the easier it's for them to impose economic reforms without any kind of objection. If the rumors about the power struggles between the NDC and the Worker's Party are true, and Kim gets rid of the first ones, NK has great chances to become the next Ex-Commie regime having an economic boom.

New bike lanes in down-town:

before:

after:

According to sources, more and more citizens in Pyongyang can afford bicycles (prices range between 50-300$).
Maybe that's why they started to paint bicycle lanes.

I wouldn┤t dare to visit a place where I can be killed if I do anything different from what the dictator expects from me... and see, I have been to China and to Cuba already.. But North Korea is probably even after Iran in my list...

North Korea is extremely safe for tourists, especially if you're not US citizen.
Tourists are treated well because they bring lots of foreign currency and they contribute to improving the image of the whole nation. They are important to the NK government.
The only thing they would do is to make you leave the country if you misbehave extremely.

But US citizens can be used as a diplomatic leverage because NK knows that the US govt. negotiates if they have US prisoners. So there is little bit of risk for US citizens going there (of course, they are two countries at war)

Anyway, in North Korea noone would for example kidnap you for ransom money, like it can happen in Iran
