Some from the USA

Canyon de Chelly, Arizona - "White House Ruin"

Canyon de Chelly, Arizona - "Mummy Cave Ruin" (built in the 1200s)

Montezuma County, Colorado - Mesa Verde National Park Ruins (inhabited from around 600, abandoned prior to European colonization)

San Juan and McKinley Counties, New Mexico - Pueblo Bonito, the largest of several ruins in Chaco Culture National Historical Park (occupied 828-1126)

Colinsville, Illinois (close to St. Louis, Missouri) - Cahokia, believed have been the largest Mississippian settlement. In 1250 it's population was said to match that of London or Paris, and at it's peak it had as many as 40,000 residents. It was abandoned shortly before European colonization for unknown reasons. Some theorize that the population grew too large for the surrounding land to sustain it (without the help of domesticated animals, mind you). The palisade wall was seemingly constructed very rapidly with little concern for the existing neighborhoods which it cut through, so they may also have been dealing with invasion. It is the largest archaeological site north of Mexico's Pre-Columbian cities in the Western Hemisphere

Trowulan Site is an archaeological site located in Trowulan Subdistrict, Mojokerto Regency, in the Indonesian province of East Java. It is surrounded by an archaeological site covering approximately 100 square kilometres. It has been suggested it was the site of the eponymous capital city of the Majapahit Empire, which is described by Mpu Prapanca in the 14th-century poem Nagarakretagama and in a 15th-century Chinese source. It was razed due to the invasion of Girindrawardhana to defeat Kertabhumi in 1478. After this event Majapahit's capital moved to Daha (Kediri).

The Nagarakretagama contains poetic descriptions of the palace of Majapahit and its surroundings, but is limited to the royal and religious sectors. Some of the details are vague, and scholars who have tried to compile a plan of the capital have come to different conclusions.

Older research at Trowulan has concentrated on monumental remains: temples, tombs, and a bathing place. Archaeological surveys and excavations have recently found the remains of industrial, commercial and religious activity, habitation areas and water supply systems, all of which are evidence of dense population during the 14th to 15th centuries.

Great Zimbabwe ruins

Fantastic pics everyone.

Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city in the southeastern hills of Zimbabwe near Lake Mutirikwe and the town of Masvingo, close to the Chimanimani Mountains and the Chipinge District. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the country's Late Iron Age. Construction on the monument by ancestors of the Shona people began in the 11th century and continued until the 14th century, spanning an area of 722 hectares (1,780 acres) which, at its peak, could have housed up to 18,000 people. It is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Great Zimbabwe served as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and would have been used as the seat of political power. One of its most prominent features were the walls, some of which were over five meters high and which were constructed without mortar. Eventually the city was abandoned and fell into ruin.

The first scientific archaeological excavations at the site were undertaken by David Randall-MacIver in 1905–1906. In Medieval Rhodesia, he wrote of the existence in the site of objects that were of Bantu origin.

The corridors between the walls.

Instead of straight lines, the walls are designed following undulating curves.
