Palaces, stately homes and historic houses of England

Ive been lucky enough to visit many places in England over the last few years so thought I would start a thread on another of Englands architectural treasures. There are far to many spread throughout the land to even contemplate of visiting them all but this thread should at least give a good taster of some of the historic and beautiful houses in England

Might as well start with one of the big ones...

Castle Howard, not actually a castle but one of the largest and grandest of all Englands stately homes. Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. Famously used as the setting for Brideshead Revisited and numerous other films and TV shows it is also one of the finest examples of baroque architecture in England

The house is set within a massive estate with a fine example of an Englsh Landscape garden. It is dotted with numerous scupltures and small buildings such as the Temple of the Four Winds

Stoneleigh Abbey. This was once a monastery but is now a huge manor house. The famous author Jane Austen was related to the family and stayed here many times and is said to have been inspired by many rooms of the house and the gossip within

The older buildings built over the monastery are just visible behind the main house

Baddesley Clinton. This property is now maintained by the National Trust which is a fantastic organisation dedicated to preserving the landscapes and heritage of England (of course im a member and would recommend joining as its a good cause)

Buckingham Palace in London. The home of the Royal family in London but according to many sources it has never been popular with any of the royals both past and present

The famous front of the building, although I honestly think the Queen could afford better cars...

The Jews House, Lincoln. Not all of Englands historic houses are massive mansions in acres of land. Most cities have great examples such as the medieval Romanesque house on Steep Hill in Lincoln

Great new thread.

Would you provide a little more geographical info - county/town names, for example?

Castle Howard is a place I've been wanting and meaning to visit for some time now - may try to get over there this 'summer' ( rain permitting!).
