The Cradle of Humankind - Maropeng Hotel

The name Maropeng, is a Setswana word meaning returning to the place of origin and this was kept in mind when the interiors of the hotel were designed. The four elemental forces of nature, earth, fire, water and ice that kick started our planet some 3-billion years ago feature prominently in the overall look.

Maropeng Visitor Center: South Aftica

Maropeng. an architectural masterpiece in the center of a World Heritage Site, explores humanity's story on the plains of South Aftica.

The Maropeng Visitor Centre is an exciting, world-class exhibition, focusing on the development of humans and our ancestors over the past few million years.

It is called the Tumulus of Maropeng. Tumulus is the Latin word for an ancient burial mound; that is exactly what it resembles beyond the flat ground of the parking facility, visitors magnetically drawn to a massive rounded triangle of turf and sod. And what a burial mound it is: outdoor shops, restaurants, banking facilities in a broken circle inclining towards a building enveloping an art museum, underground river, convention center and luxury hotel. Along the path etched stones outline fascinating details about the dinosaur, mammal and human fossils discovered close by.

Freedom Park //hapo Building

A masterpiece in resplendent copper

The name //hapo means ‘dream’, which has been drawn from a Khoi proverb “//hapo ge //hapo tama /haohasib dis tamas ka i bo” that translates into “A dream is not a dream until it is shared by the entire community.”

As with the other elements in Freedom Park, //hapo was designed to blend into the landscape, rather than impose on it. By sculpting the building frames using steel structures and overlaying them with copper, //hapo was shaped to resemble boulders.

Within //hapo, the history of our region is brought to life as each story is revealed in layers, creating a sense of wonderment and curiosity. It is a place where the historical, cultural and spiritual past of South Africa comes alive – a place where people are able to reach a new understanding of a complex past, explore the diversity that is South Africa and create shared dreams for the future.

It is envisaged that the permanent exhibitions will be structured around social spaces that allow for live interpretation, performance and storytelling. In future, many of the exhibitions will include a selection of cultural and historical objects that can be handled, discussed or used, transforming the visitor from a spectator to a participant.

Roof Terrace

Johannesburg is home to Circa on Jellicoe, a multi-media art gallery designed by South African based practice, studioMAS. Located on a busy urban intersection, it marks a prominent public intervention that challenges perceptions of “art” and “art galleries”.

Gabriel’s Garden Pavilion, Johannesburg: Garden of a National Monument

This home office is the lowest garden terrace of a 1930’s National Monument house, on the Westcliff ridge in Johannesburg.

The pavilion is formed of two buildings that sit between, but do not touch, two large existing stone retaining walls.

The roofs are designed as shallow ponds that reflect the trees and sky when viewed from upper terraces.

The building is designed to be largely invisible from the historic house behind and each of the descending garden terraces protecting the existing views.

The site for this home office is the lowest garden platform of the Historic Terraced Garden of a 1930′s house – now a National Monument – on the Westcliff ridge in, Johannesburg. The building is conceptualized as a landscape; as part of the language of the garden. Garden and building interchange, reflecting and framing each other.

Hi everybody! Please help me to answer this question. I want to build a family house. But I don't know wich way/technology it's the best. I don't want to wait for ages to build a brick house because my wife is pregnant. I think that the best choise is the light steel frame technology. What do you think? I found a very nice house on this webpage: mexisteelhomes.com. Thank you in advance!
