How does the idea sound of having a bird's eye view of the twin cities from the air-conditioned cabin of a giant wheel that takes you up over 262 feet high in the sky? Very soon, a ‘Hyderabad Flyer' will be in place somewhere along the Hussainsagar lakefront on Necklace Road.

It will take 288 people on a journey they probably have never been, except from an aircraft circling over the 421 year-old city, said Kanna Phaneendra, chairman, Suneendra Group, that is promoting the venture expected to cost about Rs. 50 crore.

The ‘Hyderabad Flyer' will be promoted by Suneendra Enterprises, inspired after the London Eye, apart from the Singapore Wheel.

A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed between the private company and the State government at the just-concluded Partnership Summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

“It will be a giant wheel of sorts, moving at a speed of about four metres per second and will have 80 cabins, including 20 with exclusive dining facility,” he said.

“The installation will take only about three to four months, but we need the required sanctions including those from the Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court,” he said.

It may be recalled that the committee has clamped a ban on constructions around the lake.

Asked more about the project, Mr. Phaneendra said apart from a small concrete base, the entire wheel would only have 80 bolts that can be removed anytime.

“We are typically looking for land around the Necklace Road, preferably in Sanjeevaiah Park as an ideal location for the iconic project,” he said.

‘Hyderabad Flyer' to draw more tourists

‘Hyderabad Flyer', a giant wheel near the Hussainsagar lake and a Disneyland-like theme park on city outskirts are among three major tourist attractions proposed to be taken up through Public-Private Partnership as part of building tourism sector in the State.

The third proposal seeks is to introduce Hovercraft services between Hyderabad-Srisailam, Hyderabad -Nagarjunasagar and around Visakhaptanam. Plans for all the three projects were submitted by private players and being evaluated by the Government, according to Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Tourism Department.

He told The Hindu on Thursday that ‘Hyderabad Flyer was planned to be developed on the lines of ‘London Eye' and Singapore Flyer', two famous global tourist destinations.

It would be a giant wheel of 150-160 feet from where one could have a good view of the entire city.

The theme park was planed to be set up at Badvel near Rajendranagar on city outskirts. A feasibility study was taken up on the proposal for Hovercraft services.

The Hovercraft would land and take-off on water. The company which was operating such services between Port Blair and Havelock in Andaman & Nicobar Islands has proposed to launch it in Andhra Pradesh. Speaking at CII-sponsored ‘Suminfra-2011' earlier, he said Andhra Pradesh was receiving the largest number of domestic tourists. He said the Union Ministry of Tourism had identified AP as the most State among the second category after the prime States.

There were three main hubs—Tirupati with pilgrim tourism, Visakhapatnam-leisure tourism and Hyderabad-business and heritage tourism.

Plans to offer higher commission to travel trade; conduct road shows in Pune, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi & London in two months

Andhra Pradesh (AP) which holds the numero-uno position in terms of attracting domestic travellers, has decided to further increase its tourist footfall, both domestic and international. Chandana Khan, IAS, Special Chief Secretary – Tourism, Government of Andhra Pradesh informed that the tourism department is planning to construct a Buddhist style theme park at Nagarjuna Sagar and a giant wheel called Hyderabad Eye on the lines of famous London Eye. Khan informed that there are plans to develop floating restaurants and a night bazaar near Charminar in Hyderabad. This information was revealed during a presentation at a road show held in Mumbai on June 27, 2012 for the travel trade.

A delegation of tourism officials and hoteliers which also included Sunita M Bhagwat, IFS, Additonal Chief (PMU), Youth Advancement, Tourism & Culture Department, Govt of AP participated in the event. The road show in Mumbai was part of the series of road shows called ‘Andhra Pradesh Tourism Interactive Meet’ planned by the tourism department across India this year. In the next two months similar road shows will be conducted in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Nagpur and in London (July 12, 13, 14, 2012). “Our aim is to reach out to maximum number of travel agents and tour operators through the road shows and attract more tourists. In order to tap the international markets, we have conducted a road show in Dubai and will conduct road shows in London on July 12, 13 and 14, 2012. We have a state tourism budget of Rs 50 crore, and also funds to the tune of Rs 100 crore from the centre in form of various grants for tourism promotion,” stated Khan.

She said that while the state had good infrastructure, connectivity and good and relatively cheap accommodation, there was a shortage of good guides, a problem they were addressing by initiating training programmes for guides. “We are also planning to offer higher rate of commission to the travel trade,” revealed Khan. Among other initatives for tourism promotion, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has announced a tie-up with domestic airlines such as SpiceJet and Jet Airways for promoting Religious Tourism with a two-day package costing Rs 9,199. It includes flights, accommodation transportation and visits to Srikalahasti Temple, Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Srinivasa Mangapuram Temple, Venkateswara Swamy Temple. APTDC has also launched Andhra Pradesh Vacation Packages which comprises road-cum-river cruise, road-cum-rail, road-cum-sea retreat, road-cum-sea backwater cruise and temple package tour.

And this year, wish Hyderabad’s most famous man-made water body an even longer life as the lake celebrates its 450th year of existence (it was built in 1562 during the rule of Ibrahim Qul Qutub Shah who named it in honour of the late Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali). Continuing as a major relaxation spot among the city’s denizens, both young and old, it is expected to see improved cleanliness and innovative tourism projects this year.
Clean Lake a befitting birthday gift
As far as officials with the Tourism Department and the Buddha Purnima Project (the nodal organisation under HMDA currently engaged in the maintenance of the lake) are concerned, the most befitting gift Hyderabad can give the lake is helping it regain its lost freshness.
“The entire project of lake water rejuvenation by diverting sewerage and building Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) will help clean the water. The work should have been over by early next year, but due to the dredging work, it will be completed by early 2014. What better birthday gift for the lake than to make it clean and pure?”, asked an official with the engineering department at Buddha Purnima.
“In a couple of weeks, 20 MLD capacity of one of the 50 MLD STP plants being set up will be completed, helping upgrade the plant to tertiary level, which will provide water of highest quality by filtration. Once the remaining capacity and the second STP plant become operational, at most by early next year, stench from the waters will reduce and the visual appeal will improve,” he added.
New attractions
Apart from restoring the lake’s lost glory, plans are also afoot to boost tourism beyond just the boating options currently on offer. “Just like the London Eye (a giant wheel with air-conditioned cabins where people can sit and dine) set up on the banks of the River Thames, private investors have evinced interest in setting up a Hyderabad Eye nearby the Hussainsagar Lake. We have also decided to re-launch the Necklace Week, a week-long festival along the Necklace Road later this year preferably in September during the time of World Tourism week,” explained Chandana Khan, Secretary, Department of Tourism.
She also added that a floating restaurant to be set up on the lake is on the cards, which once operational would be a major attraction for tourists. Current statistics show that despite all the bad press, more than 9,56,500 people opted for rides on cruise boats, mechanised boats or speed boats plying on the lake, which is a 11% increase from the number of water recreation-based tourists to the lake in 2010-11.
With newer features and better quality of water to be soon available, expect the numbers to go up even more, starting this jubilee year.

In what will arguably be the most exciting addition to Hyderabad’s skyscape in 2013, the city is all set to have its own mechanized giant wheel on the lines of the iconic London Eye! What’s more. The observation wheel that will be strategically located on the Necklace Road, offering a bird’s-eye view of the Hussain Sagar Lake, will also have a dining facility!

The company that built the Delhi Eye will set it up in Hyderabad too. We have identified three prospective sites on Necklace Road. I asked the company to build bigger cabins for the Hyderabad Eye because we plan to include a dining facility. The cabins will move at a slow pace so that people can enjoy the view and food. This will be up in the next one-and-a half years.” Dinner with a view.

The Ferris wheel that will tower over hundred feet above the ground level promises a panoramic view of the city’s landscape. While there is an embargo rule that no permanent structure can be erected on Necklace Road, Chandana clarifies that this is not a permanent structure — it’s a ‘nuts and bolts’ structure that will be erected on the spot.”
And that’s not the only piece of good news for Hyderabadis. Apart from being able to dine mid-air, you can now enjoy a yummy meal right in the middle of the Hussainsagar lake. AP Tourism has tied up with a prominent city-based restaurant chain to launch a floating restaurant aboard a boat that will cruise along the Hussain Sagar Lake. “The restaurateurs are planning to import a boat, most probably from Singapore. The floating restaurant will cruise along the lake and not just be anchored in a spot. This plan too should be up and running within one-and- half year, and will be open for both lunch and dinner,”

The "Delhi Eye" is just 45 meters tall. Don't tell they are going to replicate this thing. A Flyer should be atleast 100 meters in height.

But a 45 meter tall structure will not be so dominant in the area around Hussain Sagar. It will look good no doubt but it may not look big from the opposite shore.

London Eye Gets Desi Competition

Andhra Pradesh enjoys the reputation of drawing a record number of domestic travelers every year, a status it will only redefine with the opening of a unique Buddhist style theme park at Nagarjuna Sagar. The state is also ready to increase its popularity with the opening of a giant wheel called Hyderabad Eye, built along the same lines as the world-famous London Eye which is a giant wheel with air-conditioned cabins where people can sit and dine.

Hyderabad Eye will be set up along the banks of the Hussain Sagar lake, the city’s most famous man-made water body which celebrates its 450th year of existence this year. There are plans to develop floating restaurants and a night bazaar near Charminar which is known for silverware and pearls.



Other recent initiatives for tourism promotion include an increased endorsement of the State’s road-cum-river cruise, road-cum-rail, road-cum-sea retreat, road-cum-sea backwater cruise and temple package tour. Also known as the City of Pearls, Hyderabad is also famous for the Golconda Fort, the Laad Bazar and the fascinating Salar Jung Museum.

Any idea if this clearance is done for Hyderabad Eye??????????? Though this article says they are planning to allot land for transportation wing, not prompt on what would be taken up here.

The officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Tuesday removed 60 huts that have been built illegally on the government land near Sanjeevaiah Park. Around 25 members of the civic staff took up this demolition drive in the morning at 9.30 am and completed the process by afternoon.



Sensing trouble from the slum-dwellers, a heavy police force, which included 35 women constables, was deployed at the location. Slum-dwellers who vented their anger against the civic officials when they visited site the last week did not raise any objection this time. They moved out with their belongings and household utensils after which a JCB pulled the huts down.



Later, the civic staff leveled the two acres stretch of the said land. Prior instructions were given to the encroachers to vacate the land. Since they did not heed, GHMC was left with no option but to take up this drive, town planning officials stated. Civic authorities are planning to allot this site for the transportation wing of the corporation

The city will get an entertainment centre along the lines of the London Eye and a museum like Madam Tussauds if discussions between the business delegation led by London Mayor Boris Johnson and ministers and officials of the Andhra Pradesh government bear fruit.

Making a presentation on the investment opportunities available in the city and the state, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad said that for Indian tourists visiting London, Madam Tussauds Museum and London Eye, apart from the Kohinoor diamond, are always must-visit spots. He pointed out that even Hyderabad could have such facilities.

Joking that he could not guarantee about the Kohinoor, Mr Boris Johnson added that the companies in London would be certainly interested in setting up facilities like the London Eye and Madam Tussauds in Hyderabad too.

The delegation evinced interest in projects such as transit-oriented development along Metro Rail, the Musi river front development, regeneration of Hyderabad city (old city), cleaning of lakes and entertainment and infrastructure development pro-jects like ports and
airports.

The above were discussed between Mr John-son and ministers and officials of the AP government. Mr Johnson’s two-day visit to Hyderabad coincided with the visit of a 22-member UK Trade Mission to India.
