Kharicut Canal Beautification Project

Kharicut Canal is a 20 metre wide canal flowing through Eastern Ahmedabad for nearly 20 kilometres. Due to years of neglect and sewage openings in the canal, it had become an eyesore to the people and emitted a foul odour.

To relieve the people, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the State Water Resources Department (SWRD) has taken up the task to beautify the canal and provide the public with a long recreational space 20 kms long.

This project is a miniature version of the Sabarmati Riverfront. Since it is almost 20 kms long and one of a kind project in the country, I decided to create a separate thread for the project...

As a part of their pilot project, SWRD took up development work and built the planned design covering 3 km in length. The newly constructed 3 km belt of the canal lies in the area between Naroda-Dedham Road to Pushpkunj Society and has been completed in a period of four months.

Regarding details of the event, JK Trivedi, Executive Engineer of the project revealed that, the pilot project has been constructed and has been beautified with seven water falls, six bridges, 350 decorative lamp posts and four landscapes. "We have completed the pilot project in a very short period of time, which has cost us around Rs 3.5 to 4 crores," added Trivedi.

Talking to media, Trivedi said, "This project has been taken up with two main objectives, first is to facilitate water for residential as well as industrial areas and second, for the purpose of irrigation."

When asked about future plans, Trivedi revealed that the second phase of the project involving 20 km will now be undertaken from Naroda to Vatva. "The project will involve construction of 40 bridges, 1,500 decorative lamps, children's park, benches and foot path. This will take around 1.5 years for completion," added officials.

After cleaning and beautifying the canal, which was used for dumping garbage, there arises a concern for maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of the canal, as the industries would again dump their waste, while residential people will dump their garbage. Clarifying this, officials said, "We will have 70 waste collection units, who would collect solid waste from door to door. This will ensure that people do not dump their garbage in the canal."

A pilot project has been completed and inaugurated by the CM.

The pilot project of 2.8 km from Muktidham to Pushpkunj in Naroda has been completed. The rest of the 17-odd kms are under development.

This project has been really kept a secret, I went for a long long drive along the entire 20 km canal. I started from the south side coming upstream.

The first thing to notice is that they have completely cleaned the canal. Almost 95% of the rubbish has been removed. There is a wall running throughout on both sides. 1 lane or 2 lane roads run along both sides of the canal.

Numerous bridges have been built. Most of them are built for motorable traffic but some are exclusively for pedestrians.

Further, to the north the pilot project is a feast to the eyes

Fencing has been done over the walls on both sides, pavements have been laid down, roads resurfaced, fancy lights put up, stretches of public spaces with children parks, street furniture like garden benches, litter bins etc have been put up and the best thing is the way each and every bridge across the canal in the 2.8 km stretch has been elegantly and creatively designed.

This is the south side of the canal, cleaned but not developed...

As you can see, even these undeveloped stretches look pleasant and there was absolutely no foul smell coming from the canal.
