Nice tidy improvement but that bloody road looks so god awful.

Shoosmiths move confirmed

Quote:
Shoosmiths takes Two Colmore Square space

Last updated: 20th Dec 2012 at 08:20am

Law firm Shoosmiths is to move to a bigger office in Birmingham city centre.

The firm has agreed to relocate to the city's largest office floor plate – 40,000 sq ft – one of the last two of this size remaining at Two Colmore Square.

It has signed a 15-year lease with landlord Nurton Developments and scheduled the move for May 2013. The agreement for lease has been exchanged.

Partner and head of office Jason Jackson said: "This is a hugely exciting opportunity, and one that might not have been available to us if we hadn't acted now.

"We're not moving very far – from one end of Colmore Row to the other – but it’ll make a world of difference."

About 170 legal advisers and support staff will make the move from its existing second city office at 125 Colmore Row, where it opened with just seven people in 2002. It currently occupies two floors.

Gateley and GVA advised Nurton Developments, while CBRE advised Shoosmiths.

I'm not sure what impact this will have on these issues but a serious long term strategy needs to be drawn up for the area including Salford Circus.

The demolition of the pub seems a bit unnecessary to me. I'm trying to find the justification for it, considering it's incredibly popular on match days. It's not a particularly attractive pub - it's quite a ham-fisted attempt at Victorian design - but it's culturally important to the area.

Good improvement although is does seem kind of jammed in there. As Bachy says, it doesn't really fit in with the building. Unless this is a little preview of what might be to come for the rest of building - generic black cladding...

I hope something gets done about the podium on the Smallbrook Queensway side as that is absolutely dire. It could go some way to bringing the street together more also.

Apparently the police are looking at selling up Lloyd House due to budget cuts and possibly moving out to a purpose-built facility in Aston. At the moment I think the option is only being explored so there's nothing set in stone.

That could be interesting, wonder if post and mail will put in for planning again with a revised height as they originally intended for a taller building until the police raised the issue of their radio mast...

Or EDG could buy the building and link it to their P&M building / carpark with a bridge. The opportunity to turn Lloyd House into a ground / first floor retail / eatery / bar option with hotel and apartments above looks too good to let go. And would spread the after hours life into this part of town more as well as retail into the area.

The option which apparently is being favoured is to condense about five police offices in the city, including Digbeth and Belgrave Middleway, into Lloyd House. They wanted to do this earlier but there are fire regulations restricting how the building can be used - the plan would involve building an additional emergency staircase to the building allowing it to be totally open plan and accommodating much more staff.

That plan would save more money in the long term, whereas selling Lloyd House would bring in a lot of cash in the short term.

Even if P&M put in a revised application, it wouldn't be effective for quite a few years.

Does anyone know if the New Years Eve firework display is going on as usual in Centenary Square tomorrow?

Not as far as I know. I don't think there was a display last year. Economic cutbacks I think.

Yes is it. Fireworks that is. Off the top of the old car park on Holliday Street. The lessons of last year's damp squib have been learned.

Currently setting them up.

Might be a blink and you'll miss it type of display though.

Is there anything happening to actually make a crowd, or are they just setting off a few random fireworks like a chavvy family in Bartley Green?

I was there last year and it was a complete joke. Hopefully it was better this year!
