Not so in English football, where any team can be promoted through the divisions, all the way to the Premier League, and any team can be drawn against any other team From any other division in the FA Cup. Consequently, most people only support one team. As it happens, I neglected to mention hundreds of non league teams that could equally, one day, rise through the divisions all the way to the top.
I've met a few people who have two favorite clubs, their local one and a top flight one.

And it's not like most teams ever sniff a significant jump in leagues, it's either very incremental or they just bounce between two levels.

To be honest the other pro sports take away more fans than NCAA, especially due to NCAA being on Saturdays and NFL on Sundays. (And high school on Fridays, something that most other countries don't have, they go straight into pro-am programs.) But that's certainly an issue for football though w/ the various levels, as everyone plays at pretty much the same freaking time. And usually the NHL and NBA teams share arenas, so they can never be at home at the same time.

They also make a big effort to avoid playing at the same time. For a long-time it was NFL Sunday and NCAA Saturday (and High School Friday in at least some places). Even now there are few Saturday NFL games (mostly after the regular college season) and few Sunday college games (only bowls?).

Edit: Apologies. I totally missed the post by bewilder2 (new page).

Only the first week when NFL has yet to start. Bowls they actually still avoid Sundays, like last year when all the bowls moved to Jan 2 in order to avoid NFL's slate.

But back to the thread, will QPR's plan be derailed considering the likelihood that they will be relegated at the end of the season?

QPR push on with new stadium plans despite looming relegation

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes hopes to have some “good news” about the west Londoners' hunt for a new stadium in the next two weeks.

While the Hoops look all but certain to be relegated from the Barclays Premier League, plans for off-field development appear to continue apace.

Ever since Fernandes completed his takeover in 2011, the club have been keen to bring facilities up to top-flight standard and last summer he confirmed QPR were looking at three potential sites for a new home.

An update on that search looks imminent after Fernandes today took to Twitter to explain a widely-reported £15million loan taken by the club.

"Loan for qpr is for new stadium," he said via his account, tonyfernandes.

"Next 2 weeks will be hopefully good news. But work is starting. We will not say anymore on stadium."

The Hoops' Loftus Road home is the smallest ground in the top flight with a capacity of just 18,439 and Fernandes intimated a new stadium would cost around £150million.

The club had last summer hoped to reveal plans for a new 35,000-seater stadium in the Shepherds Bush area but they never materialised.

QPR chief executive Philip Beard has previously spoken of his plans for the new stadium to be "part of a hub of a wider entertainment destination".

Which would make sense given that Earls Court will be demolished for housing. Glad progress is still being made, 'cause even if things run smoothly, it'll still be years before a new stadium opens for business. Only a week left now before a decision is made by Ealing Council in regards to the new training ground, too.

Yes with Earls court going, there is room for another indoor venue to the West Of London, but true, all this is years away. The training ground must come first and its important we get that too

Is there any other city in Europe that can make such a claim? Moscow, perhaps?
in 2008 13 professional (three top divisions) teams have been in Moscow (and 10 km around):
CSKA, Spartak, Dynamo, Lokomotiv, FC Moscow, Khimki (in Premier League), Sportakademclub, Torpedo (in First Division) and MVD, Nika, Reutov, Zelenograd, Torpedo-ZIL in Second Division. (now there's only 8 left)

Well if you're being pedantic about professional football teams in London (outside of the Premier League), in addition to those teams listed by JimB you should add: Brentford, Barnet, Leyton Orient, and Dagenham and Redbridge bringing the total to 15. And that's not including the many non-league teams of professional/semi professional statuses outside the top 4 divisions.

I sincerely hope QPR don't come back. 3 teams in one area of one city is a joke. I want a more balanced league, not just clubs from a few areas.

Fulham & QPR offer nothing, they've not come up and survived on merit, they've done so because they're bankrolled.

Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, etc... So many great clubs with history and large fanbases. The Premier League is becoming drab, too many small clubs that add nothing, thriving due to rich backers.

As a product, these small clubs make the league look naff. Good riddance to QPR & Reading, I also hope Wigan join them, another drab team which send everybody to sleep.

Speaking of semi-professional clubs you can probably add Barnet to this list now that they relegated to the Football Conference.

Being bankrolled by a rich owner is no unique fate of smaller clubs, however.

I'll add this, even though it's an article from The Sun:

Quote:
QPR’S new £150million ground is set to be called the Air Asia stadium.

The airline company, run by Hoops’ owner Tony Fernandes, is already the club’s shirt sponsors.

Now they will get naming rights for the proposed 35,000-capacity venue.

Fernandes insists QPR have outgrown their 18,500 Loftus Road home.

A Rangers insider said a formal announcement on the move is “very close.”
