Fantastic to see all these recent announcements! Destinations like Rotterdam and Madrid are ones I've put off flying to before because they don't fly from BHX. Can only see the airport growing further!

New route to Dubai with Thomson

Lots to look forward to at BHX including this nice little extra for W16/17 with Thomson Airways.

Flights will be in December 2016.

Flights will use the B787 and fly to Dubai World Central (DWC), so technically a new destination

NEW ROUTES BOOST REVENUE AT BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT
29 SEP 2015

Revenues have surged at Birmingham Airport during its "busiest ever year" as the introduction of a string of new routes boosted passenger numbers, newly filed accounts seen by Insider have revealed.

In the year ended 31 March 2015, Birmingham Airport Holdings Ltd turned over £121.1m, up from £113.7m a year earlier.

During the period, a number of airlines introduced new routes from the airport, including Icelandair's service to Reykjavik, Norwegian Air Shuttle's route to Madrid, and Thomson's 787 Dreamliner service to Jamaica.

In July, it also became the first airport outside of London to introduce a direct flight to China via China Southern Airlines. The following month, it reported its business ever period in its 75-year history, with more than 1.1 million passengers passing through its terminals in August.

Dublin retained its title of most popular destination for customers during the 2014/15 financial year, followed closely by Dubai and Amsterdam. However, Dubai is expected to overtake the Irish capital after Emirates launched a third daily service to the Middle Eastern city.

A statement signed off by directors said the airport's 2015/16 financial year "look equally exciting" as it further expands its route network.

It comes after flights to Barcelona with Vueling and John F Kennedy Airport with American Airlines launched in May 2015. Flybe also expanded its services, offering routes to Bastia, Biarritz and Deauville.

Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham Airport, added: "Following the record year experienced in 2014/15 we have continued to grow passenger numbers and broke the 10 million passenger mark in August 2015 for the first time.

"This year alone we have welcomed eight new airlines to Birmingham as more and more carriers realise the strong business and leisure market in the Midlands region and the airport's investment to offer a world class facility.

"We are confident that this trend will continue given the wider range of the destinations that we now offer, and Dubai might possibly overtake Dublin this year to become our busiest route."

Pre-tax profit at Birmingham Airport Holdings for the year fell to £16.2m from £18.8m due to exceptional costs of £4m associated with a restructure and a further £1.3m for air traffic control transition. Operating profit increased to £30.6m from £27.9m.

Commercial income increased by more than £5m to £69.9m, while aeronautical income was up to £51.2m from £49.2m.

In January, Canadian pension fund Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, acquired an additional stake in Birmingham Airport, taking its shareholding to 48.25 per cent.

Ryanair to grow 25% at BHX in 2016

Ryanair unveils plans to grow by 25 per cent at Birmingham Airport

Ryanair’s policy of paying more attention to customer service has been highlighted as a key factor behind growth plans which are set to see a 25 per cent increase in operations at Birmingham Airport.

Growth at Birmingham includes two new twice weekly routes to the Greek island of Corfu and the Lithuanian capital Vilnius as well as additional flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Dublin, Malaga, Malta and Palma.

In all the Dublin-based budget airline is introducing 21 new routes from Birmingham in its summer 2016 schedule in a move that is expected to see its passenger numbers at Birmingham soar to 1.75 million each year.

Ryanair’s head of sales and marketing, Carol Anne O’Neill, told the Post the airline’s growth at Birmingham, which outstrips its wider growth forecast, could at least in part be directly attributed to its ‘Always Getting Better’ programme.

Introduced last year, the initiative saw a radical new approach to customer service and new bases, a new personalised website, a new app, new cabin interiors, new crew uniforms and improved inflight menus.

Crucially it also offers allocated seating and the opportunity for passengers to have a second carry-on bag.

Ms O’Neill said: “We did need to up our game in terms of the customer experience and we are seeing more passengers travelling with us because the customer experience is now a much better one.

“Michael O’Leary has been quoted as saying if he knew that being nice to customers would make him more money he would have started being nicer a long time ago. We have had a fantastic year.”

Ms O’Neill said the additional routes at Birmingham are part of wider growth plans for the airline.

It currently has 328 aircraft but has ordered 380 new aircraft as part of a renewal that should see its fleet grow to 520 aircraft by 2024.

In addition to the new routes at Birmingham, Ryanair’s expansion at the airport sees its Dublin service increase from four to six flights a day, while its Barcelona service increases from one flight daily to nine each week.

The Alicante service will increase from ten flights a week to 14, Malaga from a daily flight to nine a week, Malta up to three a week from twice-weekly and Palma up from seven flights a week to nine.

Ryanair’s Always Getting Better programme has also seen the launch of a business class service on all its flights and Ms O’Neill said the airline is keen to attract more customers from the business community, particularly in the Midlands.

“We want to attract the business customer, so launched our Business Plus and we will continue to enhance that,” she said.

“Business Plus was launched at the end of August 2014 and we have had a very good response to it - it is growing.

“It is for anyone who wants to get on and off quickly, as most business people do, and our on-time performance gives it added appeal from a business perspective.”

Among other features it includes being fast-tracked, priority boarding, allocated seating and an additional baggage allowance.

Ms O’Neill said the airline’s performance generally in the wake of its Always Getting Better programme launch had been pleasing and added: “We are offering as good a service as any other airline now - if not better - and our fares will also be the lowest.”

Ryanair’s growth at Birmingham also demonstrates it commitment to the Midlands, according to Ms O’Neill.

The airline’s presence at the airport, which is estimated to support 1,300 on-site jobs, dates back to 1993 and it has had a base there with two aircraft since 2008.

Ms O’Neill said: “Like in Ireland with airports like Cork, Shannon, Belfast City and Derry I think people want to fly from their local airport

Qatar Airlines announce new Birmingham-Doha Flights.

Birmingham Airport and Qatar Airways are proud to announce that new service between Birmingham and Doha will launch from 30th March 2016.

With eight flights a week, including two flights on Saturdays, passengers travelling to and from Birmingham will have access to convenient and seamless transfers at the airline’s state-of-the-art hub Hamad International Airport.

The announcement of this new route further strengthens Qatar Airways’ commitment to the UK regions, with Birmingham being the centre for the largest concentration of businesses outside of London, boasting 34,285 companies including over 700 international firms. Residents of Birmingham and the surrounding areas will be able to enjoy greater choice and convenience when travelling without the need to transfer through London.

The route will be operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner which has a two-cabin configuration, comprising of 22 seats in Business Class and 232 Economy Class seats. All seats include individual television screens, with Economy Class customers benefitting from a screen 10.6-inches wide, offering the latest inflight entertainment comprised of up to 2,000 options while experiencing the airline’s award-winning service. Every seat is an aisle seat in Business Class where passengers can catch up on sleep in a fully-flat bed or make productive use of their time utilising the large work surface area. Passengers can also stay connected while travelling with the option of Wi-Fi which is available throughout the aircraft.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “We are delighted to announce Birmingham as Qatar Airways’ fourth destination in the United Kingdom from March 2016. This additional route strengthens Qatar Airways’ commitment to the regions across the UK and will create new commercial and leisure links between the city of Birmingham and the 152 destinations served by the airline.”

Birmingham Airport Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe said: “This is fantastic news for both Birmingham Airport and the region, and is our tenth new airline to announce or launch this year. Not only will our passengers have the choice of flying with the award winning carrier to Doha’s state-of-the-art hub Hamad International Airport, they will have a choice of 152 destinations served by the airline, including South East Asia, China and Australasia.”

The departure times in both directions provide convenient, quick and seamless onward connections to 152 key business and leisure destinations across Qatar Airways' ever-expanding global network. Passengers can now take advantage of reduced journey times from Birmingham through to Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Africa with cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangkok and Hong Kong now easily accessible from the West Midlands.

The wonders of the Orient are that little bit closer to Birmingham with flights to Hong Kong taking a total of 17 hours including just a 2-hour transit time at Hamad International Airport. For those wishing to explore exotic Thailand, the journey from Birmingham will take 15 hours and 30 minutes with a 2-hour transit.

In Pakistan the airline serves seven destinations including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Peshawar, Lahore and Islamabad. The airline has also recently announced two new destinations in Australia, Sydney and Adelaide, commencing in March and May 2016 respectively, in addition to the currently operated Perth and Melbourne services.

When flying with Qatar Airways passengers can look forward to a one-stop transfer at the airline’s hub Hamad International Airport (HIA), home of Qatar Airways. The airport houses one of the world’s largest and most luxurious Business Class lounges – the Al Mourjan Business Lounge - and also has over 40,000 square metres of retail space and restaurants that includes a selection of more than 70 retail and 30 food and beverage outlets.

The national airline of the State of Qatar was named the world’s best carrier at the 2015 Skytrax Awards earlier in June, marking the third time the airline has won this coveted accolade. The airline also won Best Business Class Airline Seat and Best Airline in the Middle East.

The schedule between Doha and Birmingham from 30th March 2016:
