January 2016 passenger stats

A great start to 2016 for BHX

Birmingham Airport has started the year on a high recording a healthy 9% passenger growth rate year-on-year for January 2016 and the busiest January on record.

Last month the Midlands airport handled a total of 666,681 passengers, 55,000 more than the same month the previous year.

Demand for seats has increased on both long and short-haul routes, with the most significant growth again recorded on long-haul services which were up by over 18% compared to the same month last year.

Russian authorities have approved VIM Avia to operate up to 7X-weekly services from Moscow to Birmingham.

Airlines in the past have also been given this approval but nothing happened so lets wait and see.

Wizz Air

Following last month's announcement that Budapest is to be upgraded to there brand new A321s from November 2016, it has also been announced that Warsaw will also be upgraded to the A321 from 24th September 2016. All other routes at the moment are still on the A320. Great to see Wizz Air doing great at BHX.

Maybe WizzAir will be our Easyjet that have never really shown much interest in BHX, apart from our services to Belfast, Geneva and Grenoble.

In other news it is rumoured that we will get an Airbus livery A380 a week before the offical start of our NEW daily Emirates A380. This is to put the new double deck 3 airbridge facility into action and to test all the different parts. What a great month march is going to be for BHX enthusiasts.

EMIRATES SKY CARGO BOOMING AT BHX

Emirates SkyCargo flies high in the Midlands
Monday 22 Feb 2016 07:08

Emirates SkyCargo is continuing to grow its presence in the West Midlands as goods manufactured in the region continue to trump UK exports.

Exports by the region’s businesses grew by 3% to £29.2bn in the year ending June 2015, according to the latest figures released by HM Revenue & Customs, and SkyCargo has played a major part in making this happen.

Over the last 15 years the freight division of Emirates has expanded its Birmingham Airport operations significantly, with volumes up 15% year-on-year in 2014–15, accounting for 60% of the entire air cargo market in the Midlands.

Probably Bulgaria's BH Air will start 4x weekly from Sofia from mid-June. There is still no confirmation from the airline, but the slots are being placed on Sofia Airport website.

EMIRATES A380 TEST FLIGHT 23RD MARCH 2016

Great day for plane enthusiasts as it is now confirmed that EK will be sending an A380 from Dubai and not an Airbus livery A380 from Hamburg . The beast will be arriving at BHX at 10.00am and departing at 17.00am so plenty of time for people to see it before it comes in daily one week later. It will be testing our new triple deck airbridge, the new filters on the taxiways to make it easier and there will be an official VIP party to celebrate.

BHX really pulling out all the stops for this one but is great to see. Our medium sized airport thinking BIG.

BHX-Luxembourg

Birmingham Airport lands new Luxembourg service

Birmingham Airport is set to become one of the few airports outside of London to operate a direct service to Luxembourg.

The new year-round Flybe service to Luxembourg City starting on 5 September will open up a host of opportunities for businesses trading in Central Europe.

Luxembourg City is conveniently located for onward travel to France, Germany and Belgium with all three countries under half an hour away by road.

Vincent Hodder, Flybe chief revenue officer, said: “We are delighted to be adding Luxembourg to our 2016 summer schedule from Birmingham.

“Until now, direct flights to Luxembourg were only possible via London. We are opening up yet another key business and tourist destination to travellers outside of the M25 corridor and look forward to welcoming all our new customers on board in September.”

The service could also provide a huge boost to the region’s manufacturers, in particular those in the automotive and aerospace sectors, which are two of the top UK exports to the country.

Flights will operate from Birmingham daily

Right in the heart of the city centre.

Also rumoured to be adding more routes and increased frequencies ex BHX very soon.

Great photo taken by Metrogogo on the City of Birmingham Forum.

Vueling S16

Announced in Tenerife courtesy of Janet Anscombe

The Tenerife Cabildo says that from this summer there will be two new routes to TFS Reina Sofía from Manchester and Birmingham operated by Spanish airline Vueling with a code shared by British Airways. Tenerife president Carlos Alonso said that Turismo was constantly seeking to improve connectivity with the island, and is also reaching further agreements at the ITB travel fair in Berlin with Air Europa, Thomas Cook, TUI, among others.

The new Birmingham route will operate Tuesdays and Fridays from 2 June, and Manchester’s on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 July. (The Manchester route will be weekly until halfway through September). Cabildo tourism councillor Alberto Bernabé said that the two new routes announced today were of great importance with British tourists being the main holiday market here, with over 1.7m holidaymakers from the UK staying in tourist establishments in Tenerife last year, a growth from 2014 of 5%

Monarch Airlines continues Lisbon into W16/17

The new route to the Portuguese capital will begin on 17th June and will operate throughout the winter months, three times a week.
Marjan Schoeke, Monarch’s Head of Network Development, said: "We continuously refine and develop our network strategy looking closely at where and at what time our customers want to fly. We are pleased to be able to introduce routes that Monarch will be flying as winter destinations for the first time, in particular, our new route to Lisbon which is proving to be a popular choice with our customers.”

William Pearson, Aviation Development Director at Birmingham Airport, said: "We are delighted that Monarch is offering passengers the chance to visit the Portuguese capital of Lisbon direct from Birmingham Airport.

"This city is steeped in history and gives holidaymakers the chance to visit Roman and Moorish ruins, relax in one of the many beautiful plazas or visit the beach for some sun and sea. The three times a week service makes this the ideal getaway."

The winter schedule for 2016/17 from Birmingham Airport has already seen more frequencies to some of the airline’s most popular leisure destinations and more sociable flight times catering perfectly for customers wishing to enjoy a short city break, ski holidays or extended winter sun holiday. The remainder of the winter 2016/17 will be added soon.

For more information or to book flights please visit www.monarch.co.uk.
