March 2016

BHX up 13.6% in March 2016

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March’s passenger figures have produced yet another month of outstanding growth for Birmingham Airport. Up by almost 100,000 passengers compared to the same month last year, the airport has recorded 13.6% year-on-year growth and is celebrating thirteen months of consecutive record breaking growth.

In total, 830,544 passengers travelled through the airport last month, significantly more than the 731,357 passengers that travelled through for the same month last year.

Long-haul routes again experienced the greatest increase in demand with a strong 22.5% passenger growth since last year, with particular growth seen on scheduled services to North America (+61.3%) and the Middle East (+34.6%).

March also saw the airport record a total of 10,439,606 passengers handled at the airport over the last rolling 12 month period, 5.4% more than at the end of the same period last year and equating to over half a million more passengers.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “This rolling 12 month period has been our best ever and we ended it with a very significant and exciting March. We welcomed Iberia Express, Blue Air, Qatar and the fantastic Emirates A380 to the airport - all of which we are looking forward to supporting throughout the summer season.

“Norwegian celebrated its first anniversary at the airport in March and we also received the news that Ryanair will be increasing its winter 2016 schedule by 45%. This was in addition to a host of new routes starting with our established carriers.

“These new airlines and routes are expected to bring a lot more people to our airport as travellers take advantage of the expanding choice available from Birmingham. We look forward to welcoming these new customers and celebrating the growth this will bring.”

Scheduled traffic continues to be very significant for the month of March, accounting for over 91% of the total. This sector saw a 16.7% increase, with significant year-on-year passenger growth to Barcelona (+234%), Milan (+95.7%), Malaga (+62%), Dubai (+34.3%), and Istanbul (+19.2%).

Charter traffic made up 9% of the total March figure, which saw growth to Salzburg (+155.1%), Fuerteventura (+134.3%), Cancun (+56.7%), Gran Canaria (+47.6%) and Montego Bay (+24.6%).

This is really great news for BHX and yes whilst the schedule is not the best, for an airport that has 10 million passengers (11 million in 2016) this is a great coup and will be the only UK airport to have a direct flight to Hangzhou

I think you will see a pattern of DUB getting the year round transatlantic route diversity and frequency while BHX and MAN will corner the major east Asian routes esp India/China instead ...between them.

BHX and MAN are only an hour and a bit from each other anyway when the M6 is quiet and not contraflowed and the far corners of Greater Man and Greater Birmingham are no more than 2 hours from the other airport.

In each case much easier than changing at LHR, it will be interested to see if anyone tries an A321neo service direct from BHX to the East Coast US in the next few years, as a winter daily service with a bigger bus on the route in summer....or Norwegian in a 737 Max perhaps.

Also worth pointing out that BHX is the only other UK airport outside LHR to have direct scheduled flights to the 2 big emerging economies.

China and India

My day at BHX 07/05/2016

Just spent the day over at BHX to experience our super saturday's and wasnt dissapointed. Timed it well too as i arrived this morning to see off the flights that go around 9.00am and left at approx 3.00pm just in time for the weather to go thundery and wet. As i write this i feel a little sunburt, so aftersun at the ready and tired. Its amazing how spending the day in the sun watching planes and doing absolutely nothing can make you so tired but it does.
Anyway back to SUPER SATURDAY and i loved it. Something unusual happened to the AA 757 to JFK Today AA131 taxied up to A2 and held short for about 20 mins, but then the Blue Air 737 was at the back of the 757 obviously not going anywhere and then a Thomson 787 appeared which was going to Punta Cana so the AA 757 taxied all the way down the runway exited to the left down Echo, Delta and Alpha and then performed the same again, however the second time resulted in the flight departing. Very strange and 30 mins late, anybody know what happened ??
The airport was busy from the start but after about 10.00 went a bit quiet with a couple of Flybe and Aer Lingus to keep me company, then after 11.00am right upto 3.00pm the airport was the busiest i have ever seen, at one point there were 7 Monarch aircraft, 3 Thomson aircraft, 1 Thomas Cook, 1 Air France, 1 KLM, 1 Lufthansa, 1 Icelandair, 1 Emirates A380 and 1 Qatar 787 just on the southside of the International pier and also 4 Ryanair and numerous Flybe dotted around. This was really great to see and even better for us plane spotters. My only concern is that if the management of BHX want to see similar growth next year, they will be struggling as space today was limited around 13.00pm, obvioulsy the very remote stands were still free for aircraft but some of the remote stands near to the international pier were being used for around 4 aircraft today which i have never seen in the afternoon before. As the summer season gets even busier over the peak summer months, the airport is only going to get busier and with the China flights adding to the vibrancy, even better.
I have heard today of mutterings of a battleground at BHX in summer 2016, i think i have just witnessed some of this today and it will be very interesting to see how this summer performs for our airlines and what this may or may not bring for Summer 2017.

Had a great day though, loved it

May 2016

In total 1,005,861 people travelled through the airport in May, up by 11.1% compared to the same month last year. This means the airport has celebrated fifteen consecutive months of record breaking growth.

Long-haul routes continued to experience the greatest rise in demand with 16.5% passenger growth compared to the same month last year. Meanwhile, short-haul routes saw a 10.5% growth rate year-on-year.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “To be hitting the one million passenger mark in May is fantastic news for the airport. It shows us that the new airlines and routes we have recently introduced are proving popular with our passengers.

“We are now entering the busy summer season and so we hope that these consecutive record breaking figures will continue going forward.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for 89% of the total passenger volume for May with charter traffic making up the remaining 11%.

Scheduled traffic saw an increase of 21.6%, with significant year-on-year passenger growth to Heraklion (+122.3%), Reykjavik (+116.4%) and Dubrovnik (+92.1%).

Charter destinations with significant growth were Fuerteventura (+95.2%), Gran Canaria (+89.4%) and Lanzarote (+78.4%).
