June 2016 Passengers

Passenger figures for the month of June show that Birmingham Airport welcomed over 1.1 million people – giving the Midlands gateway its sixteenth consecutive month of record breaking growth.
In total 1,118,452 people were recorded travelling through the airport last month, up by 13.1% compared to the same month last year. This equates to over 129,000 more passengers travelling through the airport in June and brings the 2016 running total for passengers using the facility up to over 5.2 million so far.

Both long and short haul routes saw significant passenger growth rates with long haul up by 10.6% and short haul up by 13.2% year-on-year.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “June is the start of the busy summer season here at Birmingham Airport and it’s great that we have started this off with over a million passengers travelling through.

“Long haul routes are continuing to perform well but our short haul routes also saw very strong growth compared to last year showing that demand to fly from Birmingham Airport is increasing. Our growing list of airlines and destinations means more passengers are choosing to fly from the West Midlands as we offer choice, accessibility, flexibility and value.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for over 86% of the total passenger volume for June and saw a 26% growth rate compared to the same month last year. Charter traffic accounted for over 14% of the total.

Caribbean and Middle Eastern destinations saw the greatest rates of growth compared to the same month last year due to new direct destinations such as Doha and Punta Cana.

Scheduled destinations with significant year-on-year passenger growth were Malta (+93.8%), Palma de Mallorca (+90.2%) and Reykjavik (+87.6%).

Charter destinations with significant growth were Fuerteventura (+147%), Skiathos (+78.6%) and Genoa (+66%).

July 2016

Birmingham Airport has yet again welcomed over a million passengers in a single month through its terminal.

In total 1,221,212 people were recorded travelling through the airport in July, up by 14% compared to the same month last year.

This has meant the airport is continuing its record breaking run of month on month passenger growth, which now stands at seventeen consecutive months and means the airport is set to celebrate a record breaking summer season.

Long haul saw very significant passenger growth rates, up by 32.8%, and short haul grew by 12.1% year-on-year.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “We are now in our peak summer travel season and its great news that recent months have consistently been surpassing the million passengers in a month mark.

“A 14% growth rate year on year for July is very significant and equates to almost 150,000 more passengers being served here. August tends to be our busiest month so we expect to beat previous record days over the next few weeks as well as breaking the 11 million passenger mark in twelve months.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for over 86.4% of the total passenger volume for July and saw a 26.1% growth rate compared to the same month last year. Charter traffic accounted for over 13.6% of the total.

Middle Eastern, Caribbean and North American destinations saw the greatest increase in passengers compared to the same month last year. This is due to a greater amount of airlines serving these regions from Birmingham Airport giving more destination choices and flight frequencies.

Scheduled destinations with significant year-on-year passenger growth were Madrid (+313.3%), Heraklion (+156.6%) and Palma de Mallorca (+71.7%).

Charter destinations with significant growth were Orlando (+206.3%), Gerona (+170.6%), Fuerteventura (+96.6%) and Alicante (+62%).

BHX is now growing faster than Dublin. I was thru twice this year and reckon it can do a million PAX a month no bother. The food hall airside could do with more space but otherwise a very good airport for a connection. I'll be back.

I know. . But can Monarch really survive such an onslaught for long.?

The appealing aspect of BHX is that it is wonderfully compact for a midsized 10-25m PAX Airport and very easy to connect through. Luton is a mess (and a construction site) and Stansted needs lots more space groundside in the terminal.

BHX cannot handle near 15m airside and will have to expand up from what I can see. Runway and parking/stands wise it can go to 25m PAX no bother.

Hopefully Monarch and Jet2 can co-exist at BHX. Monarch do have a very loyal customer base.

Yeah i agree, BHX will soon have to start construction on expanding the airport, this summer at times has been very congested inside the terminal building.

We are expecting a masterplan this year sometime so keep an eye out for further news on this. Hopefully it should be exciting.

I think a satellite terminal to the north of the parking stands would do the trick.

They could also extend the old T2 (Flybe/Ryanair Terminal) and make it as long as the International pier .
