New Route Alert:

Monarch Airlines will start direct flights between BHX-Stockholm Arlanda from March 2017

Currently an unserved destination from the airport so this is good news.

Seems the flight is Mon/Wed/Fri

Airport company invests 100million pounds into BHX

Birmingham Airport today announced that it is investing £100 million on improvements to its facilities and infrastructure, including hold-baggage screening, self-service check-in, surface access, additional car parking and air traffic control.

The most significant programme is underway to replace the hold baggage screening system with the latest advanced baggage x-ray sortation operation, which will more than double the hourly baggage processing capacity.

Other major improvements include developing a new Drop Off car park, which will be free for 30 minutes and connected with a covered walkway to the terminal entrance. Existing car parks will also be upgraded and a brand new surface car park is planned.

An ambitious programme to double the number of self-service bag drop kiosks will be installed as well as digital check-in branding to improve operational efficiency and aid passengers.

The ATC Surface Movement Radar will be upgraded to enable critical safety enhancements and operational capacity.

Paul Kehoe, the Airport’s Chief Executive, said: “We have seen enormous growth at Birmingham Airport over the last few years and we are currently welcoming 11 million passengers a year through our terminal.

“We’re therefore making this investment to enhance operational efficiency and improve the passenger journey in time for the summer 17 season, when we’ll welcome fifteen new routes with Jet2 and anticipate in excess of 12 million passengers over the next year.

“Looking more long-term, Birmingham Airport is in a unique position as in ten years’ time it will become the UK’s only HS2 connected airport, growing the catchment into London with high-speed trains and serving Birmingham from the capital in c30 minutes.

“We’re therefore working on our master plan to look at options which maximise the benefits of HS2 for Birmingham, the wider region, airlines and passengers.

“This will allow us to scope out how we can create a truly integrated transport network that can take the pressure off the overheated London system and transform our facility from a 25 million potential passenger site to 60 million plus in the future.”

Easyjet

Easyjet are cancelling there BHX-Belfast route from the end of March 2017

I think this will be Bye Bye Easyjet.

Its a shame to see any airline/route go, however they have never really shown any commitment to BHX so will not be a great loss to the airport.

September 2016

In total 1,207,796 people were recorded travelling through the airport last month, up by 15.8% compared to the same month last year.

This means the airport has also recorded its fifth consecutive month this year in which it has handled over a million passengers.

Long haul saw very significant passenger growth rates, up by 21.5%, and short haul grew by 15.1% year-on-year.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “This is a very healthy growth rate year on year equating to almost 165,000 more passengers being served here. It gives us a strong start to the Autumn travel period.

“As we approach the Winter season we will commence a £100 million package of terminal works to improve the customer journey in time for the busy Summer 2017 period.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for 87% of the total passenger volume for September and saw a 27.1% growth compared to the same month last year. Charter traffic accounted for 13% of the total.

Middle Eastern, European, Caribbean and Asian destinations saw the greatest increase in passengers compared to the same month last year. This is due to a greater amount of airlines serving these regions from Birmingham Airport giving more destination choices and flight frequencies.

Scheduled destinations with significant year-on-year passenger growth were Madrid (+309.3%), Budapest (+179.2%) and Warsaw (+137.2%).

Charter destinations with significant growth were Fuerteventura (+89.4%), Skiathos (+80.5%), Gerona (+80.1%), Tenerife South (+53.6%) and Alicante (+38.1%).

As much as I am a BHX supporter, rather than talking about a second runway which is not a big priority at the moment, how about they get improving the current airport facilities and rebuild a new terminal. Then when we are getting closer to 20million passengers, we can debate a second runway. People in this country waste too much time talking about the wrong things. Pfffffft

Well at 30m you would need a full new terminal at 20m pax like you say and Brum has nothing like the aircraft stands that Gatwick does either. Probably half as many.

I favour expanding both Gatwick and Heathrow, Gatwick first as it is easier. Heathrow R3 is over 10 years and an epic public enquiry away from completion.

Stansted will max out, along with Luton, by the end of the decade if they keep growing as now. Brum just needs more space airside to get to 20m after 2020 some time.

One of the stated reasons for building a 3rd runway at LHR is to increase the number of domestic flights.

With this in mind, what's the chance of flights between BHX and LHR being introduced? Have they ever existed and why don't they exist now? They would be useful for people in the Midlands connecting onto long haul flights at LHR. At the moment they can either fly to another hub from BHX like AMS or CDG or make an inconvenient 2 hour+ journey to LHR by car or public transport.

Most people will find the concept ridiculous due to the short distance but I know of numerous domestic routes in the US which are shorter.

Jet2 W17/18

Yep Winter 2017/2018 is on sale and more great expansion from Jet2 @ BHX

New routes for W17/18 now on the website. Funchal (1 weekly), Geneva (3 weekly), Grenoble (1 weekly), Kraków (2 weekly), Prague (2 weekly), Salzburg (1 weekly), Turin (1 weekly).

This is on top of the already announced sun routes to span/ canaries a few weeks ago.

As you say its not as daft as some people think and yes British Midland used to have x3/4 flights a day to Heathrow but were stopped in the late 90s, we even had flights to Gatwick. From the report over the last few weeks Re: 3rd Runway at LHR it appears BHX is omitted from the list of increased regional flights so it doesn't look like we will be seeing them return any time soon.
