As passenger numbers increased, Emirates added more aircraft to the rou.

Thomson's winter long-haul programme for 2016/2017 includes fortnightly flights to Phuket and Mauritius (alternate Thursdays) and weekly Goa flights (already showing as New Routes on the MAN website but strangely the new easyJet routes aren't!)

The world prefers Birmingham more than Manchester

Manchester is one of the major cities in the UK, but it lags behind Birmingham as when it comes to visiting and flying, and when it comes to visiting and flying, most of the Airlines prefer flying to Birmingham which is officially UK's second city behind London.

When they do flight launches, Birmingham is the city that always gets chosen. On May 8th, they launched a direct flight between Birmingham (BHX) and New York (JFK).

When it comes to tourism, Birmingham always outranks Manchester, so Birmingham should not only be the UK's second city, it should also be UK's second capital.

Birmingham is UK's second city, obviously the population and the size matter. Birmingham's population now is 2,201,302 people, while Manchester's population is 527,200.

Lots of events are hosted in Birmingham more than Manchester, ok let's be honest, who visits Manchester for some events and to go see some sights, probably no one.

Birmingham had a rank of 992,220, well ahead of Manchester at 62,000, so Birmingham should be UK's second best city.

The numbers don't lie, Manchester ahead of Birmingham for visitors.

Just a few years after MAN then. It's just Air India of the major flag carriers that chose BHX over MAN. Though MAN does have the bigger market. Wonder how many backhanders a BHX executive did to secure that route given his remarks about Hainan.

Knock announcements by Flybe include new routes to EDI and BHX but also
"Flybe have also announced that they will add a further 5,000 seats on their popular Manchester service from the airport which is having a record year in 2015."

Extra weekly service if my abacus is correct.

New holiday operator at MAN next year - JetsGo Holidays. They are going to use Small Planet A320s on a weekly basis to Mallorca from May 28 to September 24

Potential replacement routes for easyJet's Sharm el Sheikh according to that Bloomberg report

"The Canaries, which offer reliable year-round sunshine, are likely to see an increase in seats, having proved popular after the Tunisia outrage, and EasyJet will also be “topping up ski routes and second-home routes” and may add capacity to Cyprus, though the weather is less reliable, she said."

All depends on how the UK-Egypt market reacts.

Evening News now reporting the new Thomson flights

"There have been flights to Mauritius in the past, operated by Air Mauritius between 1999 and 2000.
Passengers have also been able to fly to Phuket historically, but not for a number of years."

My big book of useless facts has this:

Air Mauritius from March 1996 through to Jan 2002. Little bit longer than what they say!
Phuket = 1996 to 2000, 2002 & 2003.

Need to update my big book as all the stats stop in 2012.

DL have loaded 767s onto their JFK schedule for next summer. Of interest is that it appears to be the premium heavy version of the 767-300

Air China application now in the Evening News

"A Manchester Airport spokesman said: 'After what has been a phenomenal year of Manchester forging ties with the Far East, we understand that Air China has applied for a route to Shanghai, which is the first stage of a very long process.

'As always we continue to discuss and progress the commercial case for a wide range of airlines to connect Manchester to key strategic markets across the globe, and as and when these are confirmed, we would announce accordingly.'"

Dublin Airport has passed Manchester out in passenger numbers, around 24m on the rolling year to end October as compared to 23m for Manchester.

Both airports are set to record their busiest years ever in 2015 and to record another record year (each) next year.

Iraqi services suspended according to the Evening News. Due to some "regulatory issues" with their own operation, they had a short-term wet lease arrangement with Hermes to fly their routes but that contract was up and the cost of finding an alternate airline was too much compared to the returns generated. They hope to restart their own ops again next summer once these issues have been resolved.

Hainan's intentions for daily services in Insider Media

The Chinese airline's boss Xie Haoming said: "We have been discussing the route with Manchester Airport for three years. From China to the UK, there are only routes into London, so it's a little bit of a risk for us to choose another destination in the UK. We needed a lot of analysis; also the Chinese tourism to the UK is growing, so we chose at a certain point to go into this market. If we are confident with the China-UK relationship, there is no doubt we will increase the frequency to a daily service."

In case of any Chinese readers, here's the CAAC application
