"Manchester Airport has announced a double-digit hike in its annual passenger numbers.

The UK’s third-busiest airport added 2.7m passengers during the last 12 months, representing growth of 11.4%.

March saw 1.9m passengers pass through the airport’s three terminals, up year on year by 10.1% despite the late Easter.

Manchester Airport, which has seen three years of consecutive growth, is now ranked as Europe’s second-fastest growing large airport behind only Moscow Sheremetyevo.

The site’s bosses said growth has been achieved across the board, with 1.1m extra passengers flown to Spain alone in the last year.
After Spain, the next biggest short-haul growth was France, with passenger figures up 261k, followed by Germany (up 228k) and Italy (198k).

Long-haul traffic was also up, with the number of passengers carried to the United States more than doubling as new routes to Los Angeles, Houston and Boston were launched.
The year was rounded off with Virgin Atlantic introducing the UK’s first direct service outside London to San Francisco. Thomas Cook Airlines will also start operating the route from next month.

Elsewhere in Manchester Airport’s long-haul offer, strong growth was seen in services to Pakistan (up 112k) and China (77k). The latter was boosted by the launch of Hainan Airlines’ direct route to Beijing.

Manchester Airport CEO Ken O’Toole said: “March rounded off a strong year of growth at Manchester, meaning we are now one of the fastest growing airports not just in the UK, but in Europe as a whole.

“It was particularly pleasing to end the month with the launch of our San Francisco service, which is a route we have long coveted and one that business and leisure passengers have been calling for some time.“
He continued: “It was the latest in a long list of key long-haul routes we have added over the past 12 months, ensuring we are connecting the North with key markets across the world.

“That is on top of extremely strong growth in flights to short haul locations, meaning Manchester has one of the most varied route networks in the world.“
Aircraft movements were up last month by 11% as more than 15k planes took off and landed on the airport’s two runways"

"Manchester-Mumbai is “Skyscanner Unserved Route of the Week” ‒ over 725,000 searches; Virgin’s next long-haul from Northwest UK?

With over 725,000 searches in the last year – that’s over 60,000 searches per month! – a potential city pair from Manchester to Mumbai has been identified as this week’s “Skyscanner-anna.aero Unserved Route of Week” – a powerful analysis based on aspirational data captured from the Skyscanner.net flight comparison site used by +60 million unique visitors per month. “Manchester is Europe’s largest unserved market to/from Mumbai,” states Robert Smith, Head of Aviation Development at Manchester Airport. “In fact the airport is second only to Heathrow in terms of total O&D traffic for UK to India.”

More on this very interesting article, well worth a read...

Manchester Statistics - February 2017 (Part 1)

Please remember that 2016 was a leap-year and therefore a small reduction in passengers may be expected due to the loss of 1 day in comparative figures.

Destinations that are either new (no passengers since my records started in January 2005), or have not been served for a number of years - if the latter then the month and year of the last service is shown.

St Etienne - 2,402 passengers. This was a 'one-off' for football supports.

In the absence of much data for this section I have provided a review of the performance for the domestic destinations served from Manchester, comparing February 2017 with the same month in 2016:

Aberdeen - +1.0114%
Belfast City - +3.9198%
Belfast International - +0.7926%
Bournemouth - -94.035%
Edinburgh - -24.748%
Exeter - -1.756%
Glasgow - -35.309%
Guernsey - +2.5224%
Heathrow - -4.6282%
Inverness - -5.5044%
Isle of Man - +2.0116%
Jersey - -51.932%
Newquay - -9.8817%
Norwich - +5.3077%
Southampton - +32.934%

Be interesting to see whether MAN passes DUB again. I think it will by mid 2018 as it has a verrrry different growth dynamic to DUB.

LH to Asia is widening and deepening as an offering. Daily departures to Beijing Shanghai and HK should be the target.
SH new(ish) entrants like Jet2 offsetting Ryanair. Ryanair is a semi monopoly in Stansted and DUB that blocks new SH entrants in effect.

"Jet2 announces new Italian route at Manchester Airport in ‘biggest summer programme yet"’

"Jet2.com and Jet2holidays are expanding at Manchester Airport with a new Italian route and additional aircraft.

The leisure airline and package holiday company said it will offer an extra 90k seats in its Summer 2018 programme, which will see the firm flying between Manchester and Verona for the first time.

Jet2 will support the growth with an additional 327-seat Airbus A330 as it carries North West holidaymakers to more than 42 summer beach and city destinations, including Fuerteventura, Zante, Reus and Rome.

Steve Heapy, chief exec of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “This will be our biggest summer programme yet from Manchester Airport, with more seats and hotels than ever through our award-winning airline and holiday operator.
“On top of that, the addition of an Airbus A330 means we have more seats to our best-selling destinations, giving holidaymakers more choice than ever.“
He continued: “Such sustained growth is only possible by looking after our customers, which shows that our continued investment into offering great value package holidays and family friendly flights is working.

“By continuing to grow across all of our bases, including established ones such as Manchester, this proves that our formula is the right one.“
Manchester Airport commercial director Stephen Turner said: “We’re delighted to see Jet2.com and Jet2holidays continuing to grow at Manchester Airport for summer 2018.

“With 42 routes they offer our passengers a fantastic range of destinations.
“Verona is a great addition to their network and a destination that we know is hugely popular with the people in our catchment area. As well as a fantastic city break, it also acts as the gateway to the nearby Lake Garda.“"

"Manchester – Bangkok #1 unserved route

An estimated 135,000 passengers travelled between Manchester and Suvarnabhumi airports in 2016, making it the #1 unserved route between Europe and Thailand. This means that the unserved airport pairing welcomed 184 PPDEWs (Passengers Per Day Each Way) last year. When referring to OAG Traffic Analyser data, just under 54% of traffic on the city pair originated from Manchester. The most popular connection points for passengers in 2016 included Dubai (29% of traffic), Doha (27%) and Abu Dhabi (22%). The leading connection point in Europe from Manchester was Amsterdam, with 4.9% of passengers choosing to connect via the Netherlands hub. Looking back at traffic data for 2012, just over 100,000 people travelled between Manchester and Bangkok, meaning demand on the city pair has grown by nearly 31% during the past four years."

"New adults-only lounge at Manchester Airport offers passengers a ‘slice of luxury’"

Manchester Airport has officially opened its new adults-only 1903 lounge.
The space, named after the year of the Wright Brothers’ first flight, boasts its own chefs and provides sweeping views of the adjacent airfield.

Located in Terminal 3, the 1903 lounge has space for up to 71 people and offers an all-inclusive menu featuring real dairy ice cream created by Cheshire Farm.

Also available is the 1833 vintage reserve cheddar from Barbers, one of the world’s oldest cheesemakers.

The lounge’s drinks menu features a number of locally produced beverages, including Manchester Pale Ale and Manchester Gin.

The opening comes as Manchester Airport looks to give passengers a more premium experience as they wait for their flights.

The executive vice president of business development and lounges at Manchester Airports Group, Beth Brewster, said: “We’re delighted to launch our flagship 1903 lounge in Terminal 3.

“The final product looks superb and offers passengers a real slice of luxury before their flight.“

Monarch is the only airline to fly to the Croatian capital from Manchester Airport. Porto is the fourth destination in Portugal joining Faro, Lisbon and Madeira on the network and this will be the first time the airline has flown to the Swedish capital from Manchester Airport.

The airline will fly to Stockholm and Porto three times a week on a Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Flights to Zagreb with operate twice weekly on a Monday and Saturday.

Monarch’s Regional ground operations manager Janet Tideswell was joined by Manchester Airport’s head of aviation development, Robert Smith to celebrate the launch of the first flights.

Tideswell said: “We are delighted to add three new routes to our Manchester programme. We are the only UK airline to fly direct to Zagreb from Manchester Airport and now our customers have three new city break destinations to choose from when flying out of the North West with Monarch.”

Smith said: “It’s great to see Monarch expanding its presence here at Manchester Airport. Porto, Stockholm and Zagreb are three exciting destinations and we’re sure they’ll be hugely popular with our passengers.”

"Manchester Airport becomes first outside London with direct route to Oman"

"Middle Eastern airline Oman Air has launched its daily service between Manchester and Muscat.

The carrier said its new route to the Omani capital, which is the only service of its kind in the UK outside London, forms part of a wider strategy to expand its fleet and network.

The inaugural flight landed in Manchester at 19.05 on May 1, carrying CEO Paul Gregorowitsch along with a host of dignitaries, media and members of the Oman Air senior management team.

Officials from Manchester Airport and the city’s Lord Mayor were on hand to greet the passengers upon arrival.

Oman Air’s new Manchester service will take 7.5 hours and leave the airport every day at 20.45, touching down in Muscat at 07.20 the day following. Return flights will depart Muscat International Airport at 14.00 to arrive in Manchester at 19.05.

The route is operated by an A330-200.

Oman Air chief exec Paul Gregorowitsch said: “The addition of this flight to and from Manchester is a pivotal development and demonstrates our commitment to the UK market.

“Oman Air is the only carrier operating direct flights to the Sultanate outside of London, offering British and Omani travellers the convenience of flying direct between the north of England and Muscat.“

He continued: “There is of course also the opportunity to connect with Oman Air’s global network, over 27 destinations have connectivity inside of three hours in both directions and our extremely keen pricing means that Oman Air offers a really attractive option for travellers from Manchester or those visiting from Oman.“

Manchester Airport deputy CEO Collette Roche commented: "It is pleasing to see Oman Air commence daily direct flights to Muscat from Manchester.
“As well as connecting these two cities, the route opens up access to the airline’s incredible onward connectivity across Asia and beyond.“

She added: “The fact this route in the UK can only be found at Manchester outside of London clearly showcases the role we play as a gateway for the North. We look forward to working with Oman Air as they grow from Manchester"

"Hainan Airlines to operate Dreamliner between Beijing and Manchester"

"Hainan Airlines has announced that it will operate its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on routes between Manchester and Beijing.

The Chinese carrier will use the aircraft on the route from May 1, fitted with 36 flatbed business class seats and 177 in economy. This follows last month’s news that the airline will increase frequencies at Manchester from four to five per week, starting June 1.

General manager for Hainan Airlines in Manchester Loic Gao said:
“We are very excited to see our very first Dreamliner landing at Manchester Airport from the 1st of May. Having announced our increased frequency, it makes perfect sense to operate the Manchester route with our flagship aircraft.”

Commercial director for Manchester airport Stephen Turner said: “It’s great news that Hainan Airlines will be using their flagship aircraft on the Beijing service. Coupled with the news that they will be increasing frequency, it’s testament to how successful the route has been performing.”

The airline recently opened a new lounge at Beijing airport, open to Fortune Wings Club silver, gold and platinum cardholders, and business and first class passengers."
