Manchester Airport celebrates busiest ever April

Quote:
The UK's third largest airport saw passenger numbers rise by 17% as more than 2.25m people jetted off last month.

More than 84,000 passengers passed through on Friday April 7th alone.

The current growth makes Manchester the second fastest-growing large airport in Europe.

April also saw businesses and organisations welcoming the news that connections to China would be further strengthened. Cathay Pacific going daily with flights to Hong Kong as well as Hainan Airlines offering daily flights to Beijing.

Cargo also saw a boost with 9,338 tonnes carried - an increase of 2% on April 2016. It equates to a 12% year on year increase with the annual rolling tonnage now at 116,521.

Manchester Airport continues to breaks records, this time with Cargo.

Quote:
The growth in long haul flights to key markets from Manchester Airport has delivered a significant trade boost to the region, figures have revealed. The last financial year was the best for freight at Manchester Airport since 2011, with 103,437 tonnes of cargo shipped to destinations across the globe.

That was up seven per cent on the previous 12 months and means the total value of trade delivered to/from the airport in the last year was £6bn.

Manchester Airport’s strong Middle East links resulted in more than 50,000 tonnes being shipped to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar.
And Cathay Pacific’s direct service to Hong Kong - launched in December 2014 - has proved to be an important trade route for the region. Nearly 6,000 tonnes of cargo were shipped to the Chinese destination last year.

The increase is being attributed to the growth in belly-hold freight with massive growth coming from Manchester Airport’s Middle Eastern carriers.
Etihad Airways has upgraded its aircraft to a B777-300er from an A330, which has additional cargo capacity. Plus other carriers like Cathay Pacific, Saudia and Qatar have seen growth in their available capacity.

Asia is also a massive market with a key growth driver for UK export being e-commerce. This is due to the rise and popularity of the likes of Amazon Prime, Alibaba and Net-a-Porter.

Emirates has also had an excellent year for cargo at Manchester Airport and has carried an interesting array of items between the Northern gateway and Dubai including a number of high cost, luxury items

Manchester Airport continues to push limits as it pushes towards 30 million passengers a year, now also ranking as one of the busiest Cargo hubs in the country. Not only a benefit for the North West but much of the cargo coming through this international airport to support the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Wales, Cumbria, Yorkshire and beyond.

"Cathay Pacific ramps up Manchester-Hong Kong offering"

"Cathay Pacific is introducing the Airbus A350 aircraft to its Manchester-Hong Kong route and increasing frequency to five flights per week.

The airline has announced that the A350-900 will operate on the route from Friday, 2 June 2017, while the number of flights per week is also increasing from four to five at the same time. Cathay Pacific then plans to move up to a daily service from 1 December.

The A350-900 will replace the Boeing 777-300ER which has operated on the Manchester route since launching in December 2014.

Paul Cruttenden, Cathay Pacific marketing and digital sales manager in the UK, said: "We are delighted to be introducing our state-of-the-art A350-900 aircraft to our popular Manchester route whilst upping the frequency to five times weekly.

"This demonstrates Cathay Pacific's commitment to offering increased convenience and superior in-flight products for our customers travelling to Hong Kong from the North West region. Furthermore, the brand new aircraft provides even more reasons to choose Cathay Pacific and enjoy a life truly well-travelled."

Stephen Turner, commercial director at Manchester Airport, added: "It is incredibly pleasing to see Cathay Pacific upgrade its aircraft to the A350. This ultra-modern and efficient aircraft is a clear commitment to providing the best service to passengers from the North.

"In just a few years the Hong Kong route is performing extremely positively and allows the 22 million people in our catchment area easy, direct access to Hong Kong and beyond. It continues to unlock economic opportunities and trade between the two regions and I am sure the newer aircraft and additional frequency will be welcomed by business and leisure passengers alike.""

"Manchester Airport to showcase US routes at Birmingham’s Great Western Arcade"

"Manchester Airport is preparing to launch its first ever pop-up shop in Birmingham.

Located in the Great Western Arcade, the shop will give visitors the chance to learn more about the various US routes available at Manchester.

The transatlantic services, which are currently only also available from London airports, include flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Houston and Atlanta.

The team at the Great Western Arcade will also have virtual reality tech on hand to give shoppers a glimpse of how Manchester Airport will look after its 10-year, £1bn transformation.

Manchester Airport’s head of marketing, Patrick Alexander, said: “We have a whole host of long haul routes that currently passengers can either only go from London airports or from Manchester.

“By coming to Birmingham with our very first pop up shop means we can educate and show the people of the Midlands how easy Manchester Airport is, as an alternative of getting to, and across the capital, to reach far flung destinations.”

Opening next Wednesday (June 14), the pop-up shop will have interactive travel-themed games offering shoppers the chance to win prizes."

"Lufthansa adds fifth daily service on Manchester to Frankfurt service"

"New mid afternoon departure adds around 25 per cent capacity.

Lufthansa is adding a fifth daily flight on the Manchester to Frankfurt service following a rising demand from passengers.

Operated by Airbus A320 family aircraft, the additional flight will increase capacity on the route by around 25 per cent when the additional route is introduced at the start of the winter timetable on October 29.

Andreas Koester, senior director of sales UK, Ireland & Iceland, Lufthansa Group, said: “Manchester has continued to shine as a key market for Lufthansa within our network.

“The demand for our services has continued to grow and we have been able to increase capacity accordingly.

“This continued growth confirms the hub airlines in the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian and Brussels Airlines) continue to be among the leading carriers at Manchester.

“The growing demand for seats on our flights proves once again that discerning travellers appreciate the way Lufthansa has responded to the challenges of the travel market in the face of ever-increasing competition."

Hello Seattle!

Manchester has announced it's newest direct U.S.A link. Manchester will be the only direct link with Seattle outside London now brining the total direct flights to the U.S.A at an impressive, 13. Manchester has already surpassed many European capital airports in terms of both U.S links and passenger numbers. However, is now within the top 3 biggest non capital U.S.A hubs in Europe. (alongside Frankfurt & Barcelona)

Quote:
Thomas Cook Airlines is today launching its long haul-flight programme for Summer 2018 and announcing a new route from Manchester to Seattle, USA from 27th of May next year with tickets already on sale.

“We are proud to be continuing our expansion to the USA by launching Seattle as a new destination next year. Our German Condor operation has served Seattle for many years and the year-round service has been really popular with our passengers”, said Christoph Debus, CEO Thomas Cook Group Airline. “We work closely with partner airlines, allowing us to connect customers to 90 destinations within the USA. Alaska Airlines, based in Seattle is an important partner offering our customers even more choice to the likes of British Columbia, Alberta, Alaska and Hawaii.”

Collette Roche, Interim Managing Director at Manchester Airport, said: “To secure a direct route to Seattle is further testament to the role Manchester Airport plays in the North and UK as a whole. We now offer more than a dozen direct destinations to the USA, meaning we have grown the number of seats on sale to US destinations at a greater rate than any other UK airport this year.

“This is hugely positive news for the 22m passengers in our catchment area – which spans from Scotland to the Midlands and Merseyside to Yorkshire, and the millions of people a year who connect to our long haul network from locations across the UK and Europe.”

"Manchester Airport crowned Best UK Airport at Travel Bulletin Star Awards"

08 September 2017

"Manchester Airport is flying high after being named the UK’s best airport at the Travel Bulletin Star Awards last night.

The UK’s third largest airport fought off competition from the likes of Heathrow, Liverpool and Birmingham to receive the accolade.

The award comes after the busiest summer on record for Manchester Airport that saw more than 3m passengers jet off on holiday in August alone.
2017 has also seen new destinations to San Francisco and Muscat, making Manchester Airport the only UK airport outside of London to offer these destinations.

This summer also saw work begin on the airport’s £1bn transformation programme that is set to pave the way for the Northern hub’s continued growth.

Voted for by travel agents and industry experts, representatives from Manchester Airport picked up the award at a glittering award ceremony at the Langham Hotel in London on Monday evening.

Patrick Alexander Head of Marketing for Manchester Airport, said: “We’re delighted to receive this fantastic award and would like to thank all the travel agents and people who voted for Manchester Airport.

“2017 has been an incredible year for the airport with record passenger numbers, the beginning of work on our £1bn transformation project and expansion by lots of our airlines.”

"Jet2.com launches Winter ski programme at Manchester Airport"

British airline Jet2.com has announced its biggest ski programme to date with six destinations available from Manchester Airport this winter.

The carrier will offer up to 20 flights each week to skiing hotspots in Geneva, Grenoble, Lyon, Salzburg, Turin and Andorra near Barcelona.

In total, over 100k seats will be available for holidaymakers looking to take to some of Europe’s most popular slopes.

The chief exec of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, Steve Heapy, said: “We fly to more ski destinations from Manchester Airport than any other operator, with flights to six top ski destinations on our award-winning airline.

“People’s minds are obviously turning to the slopes, as we have seen a jump in ski bookings in September which bodes well for the season ahead.”

He continued: “Weekend breaks are proving increasingly popular so we have accommodated this by putting on more flights to suit weekend skiers, including two flights on Saturdays and Sundays, making it easier than ever to head to the Alps for a short ski break.

“With these friendly flight times, alongside 22kg of baggage and ski allowance, we’re confident of a very busy and popular ski season this winter.”

"Manchester Airports Group brings Escape Lounge catering in house"

20/09/2017 - 07:00

"Manchester Airports Group (MAG) is bringing the catering operation for its UK Escape Lounges in house and is at the same time refreshing its branding, menu options and drink offering.

The Escape Lounges, which MAG operates at its Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports, will now offer completely all-inclusive food and drink provided by its own staff.

Items that used to be ‘paid’ upgrade options, including hot breakfasts, premium beers and spirits, and hot meat and vegetarian main dishes, are now available for the single entry price.

The food and drink operation in the lounges was previously run by Deleware North Company.

The lounges are to undergo a ‘brand refresh’ with new colour schemes and menu designs with an October launch date planned for London Stansted and a November date for Manchester Airport.

Beth Brewster, executive vice president, Lounges at MAG, said: “Our Escape Lounges are intended to offer our guests an escape from the hustle and bustle of the terminal.

"We opened our first Escape Lounge in Manchester in 2000. Over the years, Escape has grown, including the opening of three new lounges in the USA, so we have taken the opportunity to refresh our offer.

“In particular, I am pleased to welcome new colleagues into MAG who will help us expand our catering offer and appeal to more passengers who want to experience Escape, whether in East Midlands in the UK or Oakland, California.”"

"Logistics firm expands at Manchester Airport’s World Freight Terminal"

"Logistics business Select Transport has increased its footprint at Manchester Airport’s World Freight Terminal.

The firm tripled the size of its operation at the cargo hub to nearly 12,000 sq ft after achieving year-on-year growth of 42% in the 12 months to March 2017.

Select Transport now plans to invest in and expand its capabilities further.
Founder Marc Waterfield said of the firm’s growth pipeline: “We now plan to invest further into security screening, with specialist X-ray equipment and a new security screening team to ensure we can offer a one stop shop for our customers.

“Cargo security screening is the next step for Select to ensure we can maintain the level of growth and continue to invest in Manchester’s freight forwarding community.”

Marc has grown Select Transport from humble beginnings in his mother’s garage 23 years ago.

He added: “Growing up in Wythenshawe, I’ve always had connections to Manchester Airport through friends and family and it’s fantastic now to be expanding my business here in this location.”

Matthew Bird, property manager at MAG Property, which owns the World Freight Terminal, commented: “It is pleasing that more companies are seeing the advantage of locating at Manchester Airport.

“Our focus at MAG Property is to identify the most appropriate property solution to suit the individual needs of businesses and, in particular, those in industry sectors that benefit from airport locations. We’re proud to be supporting Select Transport in the expansion of their business”"
