Time for my monthly review of the CAA data statistics....

Manchester Statistics - September 2017 (Part 1)

Destinations that are either new (no passengers since my records started in January 2005), or have not been served for a number of years - if the latter then the month and year of the last service is shown.

"Manchester airport launches its largest trade incentive"

"Manchester airport is marking its 80th anniversary with its largest travel trade incentive as five Minis go up for grabs.

The airport is dividing agents into five areas: Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Birmingham and above, and below Birmingham, with one Mini as a prize in each.

One booking from Manchester airport will equal one entry into the incentive while 250 bottles of champagne will also be available to win.

The incentive will be live from November 17, 2017, to November 16, 2018.

The airport’s head of marketing Patrick Alexander said: “To mark our 80th birthday we wanted to do something very special which is why we’re launching our biggest ever trade incentive to mark the occasion.

“Travel agents are hugely important to the airport and we appreciate every booking they make for travel through the airport.

“What better way to celebrate our eightieth birthday and to reward all of the hardworking agents that sell Manchester airport.”

For more information and to register for the incentive, visit the trade section of the airport’s website."

"Oman Air launches new through fares with Flybe"

"It is now possible to fly from the Isle of Man – and seven other regional airports – to Oman, thanks to Oman Air and Flybe’s new through fares. Starting from just £450, the new fares are available from eight of the UK’s regional airports.

Building on the success of Oman Air’s double daily flights from London Heathrow and the new daily flight it launched from Manchester Airport in May 2017, Oman Air is now working with Flybe to offer through fares from regional airports via both hubs, plus one via Paris.

Guests can book the through fares from the following UK airports; Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Isle of Man, Southampton, and Birmingham. This means that travellers will easily be able to fly form their local airport to Oman’s beautiful capital of Muscat without the hassle of having to check their bags in for a second time. Guests will also have the option to take advantage of the network of over 30 destinations that Oman Air flies to from Muscat.

Speaking about the airline’s exciting new offering, Simon Cook, Country Manager UK & Ireland for Oman Air said: “The success of our London and Manchester routes demonstrates the growing popularity of Oman as both a holiday and business travel destination. We are delighted to now be offering through fares with Flybe as we are always striving to give our customers more choice and flexibility. We are confident that working with Flybe to offer the new fares will cement the special connection we have built with the UK over the last 10 years.”"

"Chinese tourists are set to deliver a major boost to the region's retailers in the run-up to Christmas"

"More than 22,000 Chinese passengers set to visit the region this December
Department stores across the North West are predicting a retail boom (case studies below)

Shoppers also descending on the region for football fixtures and Christmas markets

Mandarin and cultural classes given to shop floor staff to welcome visitors from the Far East

Tills will be ringing across the North West, with more than twenty-two thousand Far East visitors due to jet in on direct flights from both Beijing and Hong Kong during December.

Retailers say they are bracing themselves for their highest sales volumes from Chinese tourists, who are also attracted to the North by high profile Premier League fixtures (including the Manchester derby) and the Christmas Markets.

And in preparation, stores have been training staff in Mandarin and creating special sales promotions.

Clara Kwan and Jeff Tong, 36, arrived at Manchester Airport on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong this week. The couple are visiting the UK on their honeymoon and said that thanks to a direct service, they have decided to spend four days in the North West before heading to London

During that time, they will take in a Liverpool fixture, as well as visiting the region’s designer stores.

Clara said: “We are here on honeymoon and because there is a direct flight, we decided to do three or four days in Manchester, before going on to London. It means we can go to a Liverpool game and, of course, do plenty of shopping in the North West.”

From 1st December Cathay Pacific will be increase its direct service to Hong Kong to a daily flight. During the winter months Hainan Airlines operate a three-a-week service direct to Beijing, which goes daily during the summer months"...

"Company behind Manchester Airport sees half-year revenues soar to £543m"

"Manchester Airport Group Investments Limited has this morning (December 7) announced half-year revenue growth of 12.7%.

In the six months to September 30 2017 the company, which owns Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports, saw revenues climb year on year by £61m to £543m.

The company’s adjusted EBITDA for the period grew 8.6% to £236.6m, while adjusted operating profit stood at £164.8m, an increase of 9.6%.

The half-year also delivered passenger growth at Manchester Airport with 16.6m people passing through its terminals, in comparison to 15.2m during the six months to September 30 2016. August was the busiest month in the airport’s 79-year history.

Among the period’s highlights was the start of construction work on the £1bn, 10-year Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, which saw Galliford Try awarded the apron and airfield contract and Laing O’Rourke handed the contract for extension of Terminal 2.

Once complete, the development is forecast raise the airport’s annual capacity to 45m passengers and create over 1,500 jobs."

"Manchester Airport adds more passengers than any other UK airport"...

"1.7 million passengers fly through the Northern hub in November
Annual rolling passengers numbers at 27.7m

Continued growth this financial year sees Manchester add more passengers than any other UK airport

Top routes last month include Amsterdam, Dublin and Dubai

This November saw 1,731,446 passengers travel through Manchester Airport.
That is up 2% on the previous year and marks another month of growth for the UK’s third biggest airport.

It comes as CAA data reveals Manchester added more passengers than any other UK airport between April-September 2017. The airport added 1.27m passengers compared to Gatwick and Heathrow that added 1.25m passengers each.

Manchester Airport’s annual rolling passenger numbers now stand at 27,764,247, an increase of 9.7% year on year.

Growth has slowed at the airport due to the collapse of Monarch Airlines which has left some capacity unused for this winter season. The airport remains confident that by the start of the summer season all capacity will be filled and this has already started with Jet2.com, TUI and Thomas Cook Airlines all already increasing capacity for next year.

The top five destinations in November were:

Amsterdam
Dublin
Dubai
Tenerife
Paris – Charles De Gaulle

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said:
“It is pleasing to see Manchester Airport continue to grow and fulfil its role of the UK’s global gateway in the North.

“Now the summer peak is over we are continuing to invest in the airport and passengers will start to see our £1bn transformation take shape and develop over the coming winter months."”

"Manchester Airport leads MAG to successful 2017"

"Last year saw continued growth at MAG, the UK’s largest airports group, as its three airports saw increased demand from passengers and airlines for flights.

Manchester Airport grew 8.5 per cent year-on-year to serve 27.8 million passengers in 2017, more than have ever flown from Manchester before.
The success of long haul routes to Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Houston, combined with continued strong demand for summer holidays to Spain, Greece and the Canary Islands saw Manchester Airport play an ever more important role in connecting the north of England with global destinations.

In December 2017, traffic was up 1.5 per cent year on year to 1.8 million.
The growth comes despite the airport’s seventh biggest airline, Monarch, entering administration in October.

Strong airline demand has enabled the airport to make good progress in allocating the slots previously used by Monarch for summer 2018 and flights with Jet2.com, TUI and Thomas Cook Airlines are already on sale.

London Stansted Airport also recorded its busiest ever year as it welcomed 25.9 million passengers in 2017, an increase of 1.57 million passengers and 6.5 per cent over the previous 12 months."
