MCIAA obtains P38M fire truck to meet international standards
SunStar - Cebu
December 27, 2006

A P38-MILLION truck was acquired recently by the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) to upgrade its firefighting capability, pursuant to the rules of the International Civil Aviation Administration (ICAO).

Assistant General Manager Romeo Bersonda said the new Ziegler fire truck was built using German design and technology, but assembled in Indonesia. Bidding for the purchase was conducted during the time of then general manager Adelberto F. Yap, who was replaced earlier this year.

Sun.Star Network Online's 12th Asean Summit watch

With the delivery of the Ziegler truck, MCIAA now has four fire trucks, including a US-made Oshkosh unit acquired for P24 million in 2001; an American Fire Bann truck bought for P13 million in 1997; and a Mercedes Benz.

Capacity

The Oshkosh and the Fire Bann have a capacity of 3,000 and 1,500 gallons of water, respectively. Water is mixed with foam and chemicals designed to put off fires on a burning aircraft.

The foam and chemicals help contain the fire and prevent it from spreading, to avoid explosions caused by highly volatile aircraft fuel.

The MCIAA is following aviation guidelines set by the ICAO several years ago, following a series of bombings in various airports in the world, including the one in Davao City International Airport that killed at least 20.

Retrieval machine

Aside from the new fire truck, MCIAA General Manager Danilo Francia said the airport also has a retrieval machine that can tow aircraft from the runway and taxiway during emergency crash-landings. This helps prevent flight cancellations.

MCIAA bought the retrieval machine for P31 million during the time of then general manager Benito Diamos. It was delivered during the time of then general manager Alfonso Alerre, but was not used even once because no such incident has happened since.

When asked why the retrieval machine was not used since this was delivered in 1998, Francia said never using the machine at all is preferable to having to deal with a crash-landing.

“As far as responding to safety requirements of an airport, we are now better off than before,” Francia said.

Brunie, Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia arrived on the 11th, while the remaining six flew in yesterday. Maybe the dialogue partners will start arriving today (Japan's Abe will fly today from Europe ).

I think this is from either Cambodia or Thailand, Mark..

KOREAN AIR (A Boeing 747-400 carrying the SoKor President and his wife) arrived just a while ago with a live coverage at Channel 45...

That's the Cambodian flag that's being waved. It has the Angkor Wat design on it.

Its Bangkok Airways. It serves Thailand's domestic destinations, but also flies to Cambodian cities. Maybe it was chartered by the Cambodian PM.
