Balneário Camboriú: the most verticalized city in the world?

Balneário Camboriú is a major beach resort in the Brazilian southern state of Santa Catarina. The town, with its steep hills dropping down to the sea, is popular amongst South Americans. The town is located 10 km (6.2 mi) south of the city of Itajaí and 80 km (50 mi) north of the state capital, Florianópolis, and has a population of 108 089 inhabitants (2010), which swells to over one million in the summer. The climate is considered mild and in summer, though hot, hardly ever reach the 40 °C, and its average is 25 °C. In winter, the average temperature is around 15 °C, but the minimum in the early morning cooler can attain values between 0 °C and 4 °C.

I love walking (theoretically), so Friday (07/20) I decided to go on a "short" tour in Balneário Camboriú. I walked 14 km on foot, along the beach from Barra Sul up to Barra Norte, and back by Av. Brasil (running parallel). Phew! The day was very pleasant, and despite the 14 km on foot (in 2:30 hours), no sweat at all. The pics are very varied, although I emphasized the city's most controversial buildings. I guess the legs pain next day paid off.

(Just to make things clear, I'm talking about number of buildings vs total population)

This looks like suburban sprawl compared to Hong Kong

It's not about density, although it might be tough to dissociate.
Great thread, Barriga, as I already congratulated you in the Fóruns Brasileiros. I think this issue, maybe Balneário is in fact, if not the most, one of the most verticalized cities undoubtably.

As I watched he pictures I thought there's no doubt this is Bemidorm, if it were not for some signs in Portuguese. Also their size and setting are about the same. Very interesting!

I'm not very fond of this type of highrise that looks similar to Benidorm. But this city looks good in general and is very urbanised. Nice pictures.

Although not a fan of Balneário Camboriú's buildings (very few exceptions), I like a lot the city's urban layout, with its very tall highrises, narrow streets and a massive density of services and retail.

Thanks for sharing, Barriga!

BC is unique. It's not the largest city in Santa Catarina State, but it's the most vibrant.

Wow! I see what you mean - a real high-rise skyscrapercity. Impressive because of this feature.

I hope it is 'cause judging from these pictures, "vibrant" don't exactly come to mind. The streets are empty. Then again, it's not exactly summer season when these pics were taken hence it still looks very "quiet". But overall, the city looks wonderful. Its amazing how many tall buildings there is for a seasonal city
