NEW YORK | 170 Amsterdam Avenue | 56m | 185ft | 20 fl | T/O

http://www.newyorkyimby.com/2012/07/...o-rise-at.html

Set to be 20 stories tall & 185 feet high, with over 200 apartments. The stretch of Amsterdam is currently bleak, so it will be a nice addition...

This 20-Story Building Is Going Up on Amsterdam Avenue

Quote:
Equity Residential has had a 20-story building in the works at 170 Amsterdam Avenue since late 2011. Brace, neighbors, for New York YIMBY has the reveal of just what that tower, designed by Handel Architects, will look like. The 185-foot building will contain 235 apartments. YIMBY, for one, is over the moon about the design, which he describes as "stellar" and "a project that can translate forward-thinking design into a human-scaled and attractive final product." We'll reserve judgement until we have a little reality to compare to the rendering.

This one is already well underway:

Interesting, however this being a residential ,the x bracing would annoy the heck out of me looking out of my window.

Very excited for this development; it's going to look especially forward-thinking for the Upper West Side!

I've always been meaning to request a sort of inofficial rule to mention the borough in NYC threads. Amsterdam Avenue is in Manhattan?

Yes, this building is located near Lincoln Center in the Upper West Side.

Lower Amsterdam Avenue Is Becoming Quite A Hodge-Podge

Quote:
With construction proceeding quickly on the new building at 170 Amsterdam Avenue, it’s now becoming clear that Amsterdam between 66th and 70th street will consist of drastically different architectural styles. There’s the tall, glassy Aire on 67th and Amsterdam, the heavy crisscrossing exterior bars at 170, and the undulating Lincoln Square Synagogue next door. Across the street on 69th, the old Lincoln Square Synagogue will eventually be demolished for another tower. And who knows what that will look like.

170 amsterdam avenueUpper West Side architecture tends to exhibit some uniformity. That doesn’t imply blandness. Central Park West is filled with solid art-deco and Beaux-Arts buildings. Even the Trump towers from 59th to 72nd blend together, even if they don’t quite blend in with the buildings further North on Riverside Drive.

The Aire:

^ Very nice. I like it.

170 Amsterdam is a new 236 unit, 20-story residential building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The building’s massing and design are driven by the site’s long, narrow shape. The solution moved the building’s structure to the exterior in the form of an exoskeleton, freeing up space on the interior previously occupied by columns. The resulting column-free spaces are unobstructed; additionally, since the exterior structure doesn’t count toward the building’s FAR, there was enough floor area to add a full additional floor.

Looks very good, especially next the the new 150 Amsterdam Avenue. And it blocks the views from the ugly Lincoln Towers Apartments behind it.

Equity’s Upper West Side building gets “exoskeletal” look

Curbed

Quote:
Equity Residential’s forthcoming 20-story residential building on the Upper West Side has received new renderings, with the fašade displaying a particularly exoskeletal design. The project at 170 Amsterdam Avenue, near 68th Street, is slated to hold 236 units, either rentals or condominiums. Handel Architects is heading up the long, narrow design.

“The solution moved the building’s structure to the exterior in the form of an exoskeleton, freeing up space on the interior previously occupied by columns,” the architecture firm said.
