Story of the project.

3 year timelapse.

Most accurate render of the final project.

Original first post

Basically, it's the new sarcophagus that is being built around Chernobyl's destroyed reactor unit. This project is very interesting for two things. First, it's massive, as will show numbers below. Second, the way they're going to build it. They'll assemble the massive structure on a special site, and then move it. HD video presentation of the project, that explains everything perfectly :

A few numbers about the NSC :

- Height : 108 metres (354.3 ft)
- Span : 270 metres (885.8 ft)
- Length : 162 metres (531.5 ft)
- Weight : 30 000 metric tons (3 Eiffel Tower)

Work started around 2010. Completion is expected to be in 2015, even though the project already suffered many, many delays.

Wikipedia's article about the NSC.

What a waste of money. This is 25 years too late.

They should just nuke the entire site and be done with it.

There is a vast amount of radioactive dust still within the ruined reactor. The current sarcophagus is crumbling and was generally fairly poorly constructed. The roof structure that the sarcophagus was built on is unstable and might collapse, which could lead to a massive cloud of lightweight radioactive dust being thrown into the air and being swept across Europe.

The idea behind this shelter is to contain the dust if the current sarcophagus does collapse. It's all about risk minimisation in a worst case scenario.

Currently, there are more than a thousand tons of steal on site, and they started assembling it sometime near the end of spring 2012. They are working on "central" pieces, and they will set up the "lifting towers" in the near future, since they'll be needed soon.

I found an article on the ChNPP journal, sadly it seems to be in ukrainian, and I haven't been able to translate it, so if anyone wants to help, thanks a lot.

Two pics of the site. In the second, you can see the new ventilation stack which was finished earlier this year.

That article says that the construction of the new sarcophagus will commence on April 24. It's to be completed in 2015. Cost of the project is a billion euros. The sarcophagus will remain fully functional until at least March 2nd, 2115, but possibly longer. It also mentioned that in March of this year 149 tons of Italian steel constructions have been delivered via railroads to Chornobyl.

Thanks a lot. If you have time to spare, a new article has been published. It seems to be going on nicely.

I have been to Pripyat & Chernobyl in 2010, and I am not glowing green. Even spent the night in Chernobyl town (a few thousand people still work in the area and Chernobyl town is considered pretty safe, the winds did not blow that much fallout there, but I can say the 1 hotel there kinda sucks and you are not allowed to leave the property at night)
