I think there is real concern about the groundwater getting contaminated. How does it help to build a cover when the real risk might be from underneath?

New Chernobyl Confinement Shelter is Largest Movable Structure on Land

Quote:
April 26, 2016, marked the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, the world's worst nuclear accident. It left 30 people dead and a trail of contamination across large areas of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. Though the lingering effects of the accident and the long-term casualties may never be accurately quantified, the aftermath of the tragic event led to perceptible changes in nuclear safety measures across Europe. In the immediate wake of the explosion, the city of Pripyat was evacuated and remains abandoned to this day.

Update from ChNPP. The first sections of the ventilation chimney are on site. The chimney will be 100m tall, you can see a render here.

Here's an picture of the chimney sections being delivered to give a better sense of scale.

For all work outside the existing buildings, it's fine. For work inside, they wear extra protection (see here), and if radiation is too high, they can't stay there for too much time. All workers are monitored to ensure that the radiation dose they receive is within the standard acceptable range.

Not really about the New Safe Confinement, but Ukraine is looking forward to build a huge solar energy station in the exclusion zone:

Chernobyl’s Atomic Wasteland May Be Reborn With Solar Energy

Quote:
Thirty years after atomic fallout from the Chernobyl meltdown rendered an area the size of Luxembourg uninhabitable for centuries, Ukraine is seeking investors to develop solar power near the defunct Soviet reactors.

Hope that soon we will have another thread to follow.
