Update from ChNPP. They started transfering the load of the arch to the locking system (25% complete).

If by section you mean the first half of the final arch, no it is not completed. One more lift is needed, work on inner and outer cladding has to be done, the internal crane might still need some beams (among other things), etc.

This (first) section should be finished next year.

Does anyone know when will the old sarcophagus be hidden under the new structure?
I'd like to make a visit before it happens

yes, you got it right. So this is the first half. Quite impressive, the structure is huge.

If everything goes according to plan, the NSC will be slid over the sarcophagus during the second half of 2015.

In other news, weekly update from ChNPP.

Key numbers :
- 2% of the steel for next lift is installed

I'm not related to this project in any way. I just find it very interesting.

In other news, they started the work on one of the new buildings that will come along the NSC. It can be seen on the lower left of this rendering:

They started to install a protective shield to allow workers to be that close to the reactor in safer conditions. It can be seen in the following picture, as those small white steel "towers" in the background:

You can see the exact construction site in those pictures (click to enlarge):

Finally, about the dismantling of the old ventilation stack (BT-2), it will be cut in 7 pieces, the heaviest weighing 55 tonnes. With the crane being almost 100m away, you can understand the need for the CC-8800. I don't have anymore information regarding the start of the dismantling (last I heard, it was shcedule for this fall).

i wonder what is the level of radiation in the working area. Perhaps inside the woods such level would be much more higher!

Weekly update from ChNPP.

Key numbers :
- 10% of the steel for next lift is installed

Also, the CC-8800 is now up, but work has yet to start on the dismantling of the ventilation tower (BT-2).

The fourth picture clearly shows the CC-8800 and the protective wall.

I'm glad to see they're working on a solution to this problem.
I can't help thinking though that this site will be highly radioactive for possibly thousands of years. So when this new sarcophagus reaches the end of it's life will they have to build a new one around that?
In the future this could end up looking like a Russian doll ironically, but the size of a small town.

Eventually we will invent anti-gravity and launch the whole thing off the planet and into the sun. For now, this is one massive structure! I think this design could be used for a sports stadium somewhere.

Perhaps when this one is completed it might be an idea to pump concrete in and fill it up to the roof. Or is that already part of the plan?

I don't think they really planned much for what will happen to the sarcophagus after 2115, since by then many technological improvements might help mitigate the main issue.

However, what is planned is to remove most of the current sarcophagus and what is left of the reactor room, using the cranes inside the NSC. They will then decontaminate those elements, and dispose of it. Nothing has been planned further ahead, but I highly doubt they'll want to fill everything up with concrete, since there are many easier solutions.

Weekly update from ChNPP.

Key numbers :
- 17% of the steel for next lift is installed

On the fourth picture, we once again clearly see the protective wall, and the CC8800. About that, ChNPP received a permit to dismantle the old ventilation stack, so it should start "soon" (september AFAIK). Also related, the CC8800 was struck by lightning (forum post in russian), but it is not an unusual event, so everything is ok.
