Construction starts on Kansas City tram line
Friday, May 23, 2014

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Kansas City on May 22 to mark the launch of construction on a 3.5km starter tram line linking River Market with the city centre and Union Station.

Construction is due to be completed by mid-2015 on the Kansas City Downtown Streetcar and commercial operations are expected to begin by the end of the year. The line will have 16 stops and the LRV fleet will be maintained at a depot near the River Market terminus.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony the city council immediately voted to approve $US 8m in funding to prepare the next phase of the project, which could involve extending the line by up to 13km. Omaha-based engineering consultancy HDR will be awarded a $US 3.7m contract to plan an extension along Main Street, which will run south from Union Station to 51st Street. Burns & McDonnell Engineering will carry out a $US 4.3m study into extending the line east from the city centre.

Two Major blows to the streetcar expansion plans today. The vote to expand the streetcar district in KC and the statewide sales tax to fund transportation projects both failed badly.

Quote:
Kansas City’s ambitious streetcar expansion plan lost overwhelmingly Tuesday night.

In official totals, Question A failed with only 40 percent voting yes and 60 percent no.
The result means Kansas City will not seek voter approval in November for specific sales and property tax increases to help pay the local share of a $515 million transit plan. And it calls into question whether, or how soon, Kansas City can build a broader streetcar system beyond the two-mile starter route.

Quote:
Voters appeared ready to reject a sales tax increase Tuesday that would have provided billions for road and bridge repair around the state.

More than 800 highway and transportation projects would have been funded by the funding boost, including $124 million for an expansion of Kansas City’s streetcar line.

Kansas City streetcar expansion will follow St. Louis MetroLink’s success — eventually

Quote:
When the St. Louis MetroLink light rail system was proposed, it was not warmly embraced.

That sounds a lot like the streetcar expansion that voters trashed Tuesday in Kansas City. Yet, the MetroLink on the other side of the state opened in 1993, crossing the Mississippi River as it connected East St. Louis, Ill., with St. Louis and Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

Then a strange thing happened. People loved it, which led to several expansions as more communities got over their biases to demand that form of mass transportation for their neighborhoods.

Kansas City will likely experience the same trend once the 2.2-mile streetcar system goes on line downtown. People will want a line running to the Country Club Plaza; to the University of Missouri-Kansas City; to the 18th and Vine Jazz District; to the new East Patrol Division police campus and Kansas City Zoo; to North Kansas City, Zona Rosa, Kansas City International Airport and even spurs connecting the satellite parking lots with terminals; to the East Side along Linwood Boulevard to Bruce R. Watkins Drive; and south on Watkins Drive to the new Cerner campus planned for Bannister Road.

Even Brookside will clamor for a streetcar line along the trolley trail. The system’s success will lead to its expansion.

What city officials have to figure out is a better way to pay for the mass transit system. Voters on Tuesday derailed the proposed streetcar transportation development district and the regressive sales tax and special assessment to pay for the more than half a billion-dollar system.

Mayor Sly James, however, remains right — Kansas City needs streetcars. City officials just have to figure out a different means of financing it before the downtown line starts accepting passengers in late 2015.

running until 2am isn't bad but I'd like to see them run until 3am for friday/saturday since that is when the bars close down. 10-12 minute frequency isn't bad either.

seeing all the track being installed is exciting, It sucks walking by the construction everyday knowing it wont' be open to the pubic until next fall, and they said with testing that it may be as late as early 2016 before it opens to the public.

^ Cool updates & pics! It's pretty sad though that voters rejected the expansion plans for the streetcar since a 2 mile system is pretty small.

pictures I took about a week ago. Track is almost completely installed for the entire route. Overhead wires are about 25% complete.

Streetcar order delayed (same order as Cincy who are also getting delayed delivery)

article behind paywall (open incognito to get around that)
http://www.kansascity.com/news/gover...e30719214.html

article highlights
Quote:
Kansas City Mayor Sly James says it’s crucial that the new downtown streetcar system can carry passengers in time for next March’s Big 12 conference men’s basketball tournament.

While the actual track work is done and the electrical wiring should be ready by the end of September — plenty of time to test the system and begin public operations by early March — now the streetcar delivery is becoming a worrisome problem, city officials admitted.

The delays are partly due to the complications of transporting parts from Europe and partly to worker training in the U.S.

It is not acceptable for us to be late,” he said. “We’re ready to rock and roll.”

While the negotiations continue, CAF faces financial penalties of $1,000 per day for missing the June 10 delivery date. The city is billing CAF for those damages, which are capped at $1.2 million, although it hasn’t received any money yet.
