Urban Decay in Southern Cities

Pictures and discussion of Urban Decay in the South.

Here's a news article from Memphis

Vandals gut value of unused school in Memphis

Quote:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A Memphis school building has sold for a fraction of its estimated value because vandals smashed nearly everything inside it.

The Commercial Appeal reported the vacant Prospect Elementary School building sold for $210,000 this week. It was appraised at $1.14 million in March 2011.

Memphis School Board officials said everything of value in the 18-classroom building had been stolen or destroyed by vandals, including the toilets. The School Board approved the sale at its meeting on Tuesday.

Board member Sara Lewis said someone should have kept better watch on the building. Deputy Superintendent Hitesh Haria responded, saying budget cuts make it hard to provide security for vacant buildings. He said the schools budget has been cut by $250 million over four years.

I was in Florence a few years ago and it's entire downtown area was in shambles. You wonder what on earth is going on in their city government?

Honestly, I dont know what the current plans are. The property has switched hands couple times and each time the new owner has plans to restore the property but nothing ever seems to happen. Supposedly a couple of the buildings are to the point where only the facades can me saved.

^Vicksburg is a mini-gritopia with great bones and hella potential...makes me want to reopen my plan to turn Mississippi into a retirement wonderland.

Where are you living these days?

I'd love to see MS become part of the New South. It looks like a really beautiful state.

Is anyone on this site from or living there?

crap, i should update my geographic location. anyway, i'm in Bavaria, Germany now.

anyway, here's my Vicksburg pics from two years ago

Mississippi, despite being neglected and mismanaged, has some nice places with lots of great potential. my cousin actually moved there from Illinois to teach and likes it.

There was an announcement for development of this building in recent years, but nothing materialized. P. Diddy was supposedly going to turn it into a boutique hotel, but I agree with you about apartments.
