Temasek is the ancient (Sanskrit) name for Singapore. It means sea-village.
The merlion was inspired by a prince spotting a lion on the island centuries ago, hence the name was changed to Singapura. Singa = lion, pura = city.

9/10 - unusual, still looks modern and distinctive for a building completed in 1986. Love it.

It used to be called the Treasury Building, and housed the government's financial officers.
