Bolshoi Theatre (Kamenny) from Saint-Petersburg, 1784—1886. Bolshoi Theatre in 1886 was reconstructed to building of Saint-Petersburg Conservatory (Today Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory name after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov).

The theatre was built between 1904 and 1906 by the famous Austrian architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer who designed several theatres and palaces across Europe in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

You have to remember that when countries in western Europe in 70' and 80' were realizing that cars weren't that good for the cities as they thought they will be, we were still stuck in communist ideology and huge national debt. Things started to change actually in last 10-15 years after we put ourselves out of transformation (and mental) hole. In late 90' polish cities looked almost exactly like in 60' in terms of infrastructure.
It's only a matter of time when this square will be redeveloped.

The National Opera House is impressive but almost too big for such a venue. They must put those gardens back it would make a huge difference. The present Phiharmonic Hall is a fine neo-classical building but I wish they would have rebuilt the more romantic pre war hall, such a terrible loss.

Unfortunately, they don't worried about it. It was so many plans to build underground parking and make elegant square, but they do nothing. Today in Warsaw's newspapers was written that they resign for this plans in the nearest future, so today's ugly view will stay for a long time...

In 1830 when the opera house was built, it was the biggest such a building in Europe. But in the meantime there were built a few bigger operas - in Paris, Vienna... So when they reconstructed the building after war damage, they enlarge it (but only back, front facade is original), to make it back the biggest opera house in Europe

The original facade of pre-war philharmonic building (from ca. 1900) survived the war, but it was seen like a not-trendy daub, so they decided to rebuild it to the neo-classical style (what a luck they don't rebuild it to the modernism!). Unfortunately, it's impossible to restore former elevation, because today building is a monument.
