#U/C: Globe Apartments - 50m / 15L / student

I'm sure I saw something on this in here, but can't seem to find it now, so I'm sorry if I'm going over old ground.

Anyway, I've found a few renders on the development that I thought were worth posting:





I'm not sure where the development's currently at. There was a bit of a re-design shown a few months back as a PDF on the ACC site and from memory, the above pics are before that re-design. I haven't heard anything to suggest that it won't go ahead.

As for the building itself, it's not the best thing you'll ever see, but for cheap accomodation it's not too bad and once filled, it should breath new life into that part of the city.

It initally got knocked back at 16 levels, then the developers redesigned and resubmitted it, still at 16 levels. Don't know whats going on though as far as being approved, but it is listed on the Capcity website as a development.

I sent an e-mail to the developer as per e-mail address listed at the ACC site and still have not heard back anything as of yet. That was over a week ago. I simply asked for an update on the proposal. I will keep you all informed of any news.

I'm going from a scratchy memory here, but I think the re-design involved more glass and larger balconies.

I remember that it did make it look better though.

It was originally rejected by council because the height limit for that particular site is about 29m

Seems like you're on a bit of a crusade mate.

I really don't see too much ACC bashing on here. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough. Will pay more attention from now on.

For surburbia maybe that would be appropriate for for a capital's
CBD that is totally inappropriate. We need to start thinking of the entire
city mile as CBD and not specific zones.

Unless we want Adelaide to remain with a lot of low rise cottages, rusty
sheds and wharehouses

Its a great location imo. Close to cafes/restraunts, Rundle Mall, Uni's, parklands, Botanicle Gardens...

This project has been resurrected. New plans have been submitted to the ACC. Thanks to beamer85 for the scoop. Still low-income housing though.

And student apartments. Really low-income housing shouldn't be built in that area.

thats exactly where low income/student accommodation should be built.

Its the richy rich apartments that have killed the atmosphere of the Rundle St precinct.

StopTheWar, I totally agree. Rundle St, as nice as it is, has really changed because of that. It is Hindley St that is now starting to take advantage of this student vibe.

WORK on a 15-storey student apartment complex in Synagogue Place is expected to start by June.

First approved in 2008, the project was re-examined by the City Council’s Development Assessment Panel last week after Hindmarsh Development SA decided to scale back the number of apartments from the original 140 rooms and 18 affordable units.

The revised layout features 60 two-bedroom student apartments and 18 two-bedroom affordable units, each with individual balconies.

The previously approved ground floor cafe with outdoor dining will remain in the new proposal, as well as a common area, lounge and kitchen.

Hindmarsh property manager Morry Canala said work on the $25 million tower - built on the site of two old retail buildings next to Target - would start by June and be completed in time for the 2012 academic year.

He said the project, known as the Globe Apartments, was scaled back because it would have “increased market appeal” and “better amenities”.

“We are very excited about this project’s ability to deliver much needed affordable student housing in close proximity to both Adelaide University and the University of South Australia,” he said.

“The development will provide accommodation which will integrate with the local community and have a positive economic impact.”
