What exactly is that, may I ask?
I'm actually not expressing some stereotypical "its flyover country" thing here. Actually I like a lot of things about the midwest, its not as bland culturally as people make it out to be. Living in a highly diverse college town my feeling about diversity is that all in all everyone is human and sort of the same just that some traits are diminished or amplified by culture. You could probably get the same impression just by frequenting this forum, which has a good mix of people from all over the world yet in the skybar everyone is at the same level of asshole no matter where they come from.

It's politics. And it's just my opinion, so don't make much of it. You guys are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Your states have certain problems but the only politically viable reaction has been insane Tea Party blowhards who will probably only make things worse. The US as a whole has the same problems that the hyper-partisan state of affairs can't solve.

If states like Ohio are the testing ground in politics and are good at predicting how things play out nationally, then we are freaking screwed.

Me as a non-American would say Texas.

I can't speak for the whole state but I've been to NYC a couple times and its by far the least american city in my mind. Its the only city I've been to where I felt out of place as an American and I've been to 30 states and tons of cities in the US. Its also heavily democrat which isn't an accurate representation of the US either.

I'm saying that the US would be about 2 billion times better if NY was an accurate representation.

I did not say it was.

NYC has always seemed very American to me. What the hell else would it be?

Only if you think that Americans are brazen self-promoters and think that their state is the best place in the world just because they had the random chance to be born there.

So what does that mean? It's bland, but not as bland as self-described coastal elitists are led to believe?

Not only that, but I'm curious what the unique characteristics of the so-called "Midwestern" culture are.

Seriously "Avian001," Texas is the best state in America. The land is beautiful, the skylines are big and tall, and last but not least the people are awesome and diverse. Texas is heaven on earth and the only state that can rival us is California. It's not just biased it's the truth. (:

And everything about what you posted reeks of why I hope and believe you are totally wrong.

How about a little modesty. Won't find that in Texas. I won't go into a rant running the place down but for every Texas boast, I'm going to have to tell you a reason I would never live there.

You say it's got big skies and it's awesome. I say it's hot and except for the eastern bit, dry and dusty and too flat for my taste (yes, I've been to El Paso and I know there are a few little mountains in that corner).

You say it's diverse and I say the people running it are know-nothing anti-intellectuals.

I'll stop now if you do.

NYC is the melting pot, I think that makes it very American. No matter who you are or where you come from, you're welcome in NYC and their is a piece of your heritage to be found somewhere. Gays also have their freedom, which is very American to me. NYC isn't perfect, but it's a step in the right direction. Too bad the rest of the state and country aren't like that.

Texas is pretty cool as well, I wouldn't judge it based on the governors and such, the people there can be really nice and down to earth.

I prefer America to represented by an area that's clean, friendly, not overcrowded, not covered in graffiti, and more Mayberry like. Cities like Minneapolis, Charlotte, Colorado Springs, etc more represent what I think a typical american city is and should be.

The US has lots of farmland, mountains, small towns, clean air, friendly folks, being able to park at your destination, etc and none of those things are represented in NYC.

"Cal_Escapee" butthurt much? We all know it's a stereotype that Texas lacks intelligence, and it's also a fallacy to say that Texas isn't diverse. Come to a school here, and notice the diversity in our classrooms... and or the diversity in Austin! Also, I never said the skies are big(yet they are), I said "skylines," so please educate yourself next time before you go on another butthurt rant and epicly fail at criticizing. Come at me bro. *smileyface*

To anyone not a Texan, Texas is a dreary backwater with poor health, labor and education outcomes. I guess that's pretty typically American.

What about Denver? that seemed to represent the US perfectly when I went there.
