In my opinion, they should say 'Welcome to the United Kingdom'...

The regional development minister has said 'Welcome to Northern Ireland' signs that have been put up in border areas are purely for information.

Sinn Fein has said the signs are antagonising nationalists and are a waste of money.

In County Fermanagh a number of the signs are already down.

The minister Danny Kennedy said there was no "no great constitutional drama" about the signs and some people were "getting carried away".

"These signs are entirely for information purposes," he said.

"They're welcoming visitors, particularly the many tourists who cross the border, to Northern Ireland and to remind them that speeds are measured in miles per hour, rather than the European measure of kilometres."

However, Sinn Fein's Phil Flanagan said the signs had been put up "for political reasons".

"The roads minister has put them up to mark out territory," he said.

"People in the border area who have to face the challenges of living in a border area are very antagonised by this and they can clearly see the reason behinds this.

"People are very angry and people want the signs down."

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board said the responsibility for all road signs lay with the Roads Service.

"Roads Service has agreed that Welcome to Northern Ireland signs should be considered as part of each border council's annual tourism audit," it said.

A Roads Service spokesman said: "Signage is placed at strategic border crossing points to remind drivers entering Northern Ireland that speed limits are displayed in miles per hour.

"Roads Service is supplementing the existing signage with 'Welcome to Northern Ireland' signs indicating the change of jurisdiction.

"The programme of work is ongoing and five out of a total of eight signs have been placed at an approximate total cost of £950."

I don't care what they say as long as they are geographically truthful. I think the only people that actually care are Sinn Fein.

They only people that care are indeed Sinn Fein. No one else seems to have a problem. Once you cross the border you are subject to different laws, speed limits and various other things. I see no reason for the debate, simple fact of life, people need to move on the fuck.

The only reason I posted this was because Sinn Fein are making such a fuss over geographical fact. It's fucking ridiculous. What do you expect us to put on our signs at the border, 'Welcome to Ireland'?

Its pretty standard in europe to have these signs at the border, even at the Scotish border they have these signs. Whats the big deal? sort out the economy first.

Seems Sinn Fein has solved the economy and can spend time debating issues such as signs and flags.

To be fair, the argument of 'it's in miles per hour so we need the sign' does not really hold. There already WERE signs saying it changes to mph (as the photo in the article shows). Welcoming you to Northern Ireland doesn't change anything from that perspective.

The mph sign is for safety reasons and is needed, and the sign welcoming you to Northern Ireland (though it should go further and say "UK") is a formality because you are crossing an international border. Only an ultra nationalist would be offended by this recognition and we shouldn't pander to the whims of those lunatics.

I am sure the Unionists will see the practicality in the same spirit.

Does not matter. A unionist currently holds the ministry responsible. After the next election (if the signs are not ripped down long before then) their will an SDLP or Sinn Féin minister that will take them down anyway. Waste of money.
