There are essentially 2 Kansas Cities. The urban core of Kansas City was the original city prior to annexation. The city was not landlocked and annexed tons of available empty land north and south of the original core. The huge majority of the annexed land is still undeveloped. So when one uses all of the land annexed this is case but it isn't a true picture of population density. The urban core of Kansas City (MO River to 85th St) is much more dense than Charlotte in the same amount of space.

In fact, if you use a true density calculation and measure a 5 mile circle with downtown as the center, KC population density is as dense in that circle as any city in the entire midwest except for Chicago.

Are you like 16 or something? Because you obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about. Even worse in light of the fact that I gave actual commonalities.

I'm talking architecturally here. (thankfully) Richmond has little in common with any NC city except maybe Wilmington

Wow, what's with the hostility towards NC and Charlotte? Winston Salem, Wilmington, and Asheville all have great architecture. It doesn't seem like you are too educated about NC. While some might be thankful that Richmond doesn't have anything in common when it comes to NC cities, a lot of people from NC would be thankful to have not much in common with Richmond. Charlotte has tall, sleek, clean, and most importantly MODERN skycrapers. Richmond has a great OLD urban feel. I don't even know why we would compare the two. They are two different cities. Charlotte shines in the present and in the future, while Richmond's past makes it shine. Two great cities. No comparison.
I have lived in Charlotte for almost 7 years, and it has changed so much since I've been here. Most important culturally. 7 years ago, it seemed kind of bland and very business oriented. Today, it is definetely clean and business oriented, but the amount of nightlife and growth/entertainment/museums downtown has been awesome. There is definetely a sense of newly established culture downtown. The surrounding neighborhoods of Plaza Midwood, Noda, Southend, and Dillworth are all rich in culture and entertainment. It's a shame that people judge the city based on it's shiny new downtown. Not many have actually gotten out and explored just 5 minutes outside of the core, and it's very apparent from some of you. I truly enjoy it here.

I just had a group of four from Charlotte come to Austin for a week to help us out at work. All of them had very heavy southern accents. These were some country boys fo' sho'.

All NC cities have pockets of urbanity including my cherished Durham. Thank goodness I know how overrated "urban" living can be....it's really an overrated experience and it's also extremely obvious you don't know much about NC cities...Wilmington??? Wilmington resides on a large riverfront that feeds into the Atlantic Ocean and resembles very little to that of Richmond. Maybe pockets of Raleigh, Durham, Winston, Gboro...Really, Richmond has rowhouses and outside of that it's like any other southern city.

Architecturally, northeastern style urbanity is cool but it's far from ideal living quarters... Not dissing that style of urban living but it ain't all what is hyped up to be...many things/amenities are a lot more accessible in the burbs.

Good, one of the things fueling NC's exponential growth is exactly that, not like Richmond...lol.

As for the population question.,,,
Chris Mathews just asked the crowd who they we're voting for and asked them what issues mattered to them. This nice lady answered "I love Charlotte. I want to move here from MI!"

On a related note it seemed like Charlotte used the DNC to it's advantage more then Tampa with the RNC.

Tampa Bay Times: Atmosphere in Charlotte more free, fun than Tampa

Winston-Salem has a gritty industrial urban fabric in the core very similar to Richmond: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=474974
