I lived in urban DC (capitol hill area) for a couple of years. Richmond is nice but it's really nothing like DC and small in terms of urbanity compared to DC, Baltimore, etc.....that's a good thing to me. I get a kick out of people who are strong proponents of gritty inner city or urban living who've never lived in one for any extensive period of time, especially a large one like DC. It really depends on where you live but it can be a tough environment, however, extremely picturesque regarding architecture and historic building stock braggin rights. But everyday living, especially easy access to amenities compared to what you find in the burbs can be challenging. But no one wants to live in or like the burbs....

North Carolinians, Especially Charlotteans, are cut throat when anyone questions our relevance, our size, etc. etc. There have even been articles in National News Papers about how we feel about ourselves. Quote:
We were not allowed to take any money from Corps. for our convention. BUT we took money for corps. to support Charlotte. So thats why we have a crap ton of "Charlotte" stuff. Not to mention our Mayor Foxx does nothing but talk up Charlotte along with Rogers, CEO of Duke Energy. All of our Civic leaders and News papers are really pushing us. All of us here are claiming this is the greatest thing that has ever happened to this city. Our Main newspaper The Charlotte Observer has been updating constantly about what others are saying about us and our civic leaders are using twitter to see what people think about us. Billboards everywhere saying "Want to Call Charlotte Home? Ask a Realtor!" and our leaders are hosting tons of events for CEO's to try to get them to relocate here. I have pictures on my Iphone I will upload later to show all the stuff that says Charlotte. Don't know about Tampa, but here everything has not only Obama's name, but "Obama-Biden. Charlotte, North Carolina" and "Charlotte - We Make it Possible" signs everywhere. Every corner. Every post. All over buildings. The official DNC merchandise mainly had Charlotte stuff to. And everyone was wearing "Charlotte" shirts and not Obama. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll post my pictures later. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/201...=1?img=4?img=4 ^ That's got tons of pictures of the DNC. So anyone know how Tampa did the RNC? |

From what I have heard here and elsewhere, Downtown Tampa during the RNC was pretty much a ghost town aside from a huge police presence.
Skyscrapercity: 2012 Republican National Convention Granted Hurricane Isaac probably did not help things but it seems like there was no attempt at creating street vibrancy during the convention, compared with Charlotte.

According to the Observer protestors are complaining that they've turned Charlotte into a police state.

BTW, friendly warning: I may be moving to Charlotte. I'd be staying in Gastonia for a matter of months and possibly looking to relocate closer to the city. My fitness business will transfer but I'll need time to build it up to Orlando levels. So, I'd probably be looking for a part-time/punch-clock job to tide me over.
I plan a scouting trip in the next few weeks. Perhaps I could meet up with some of you ? And maybe you could introduce me to some folks as it would be useful for me to hit the ground running, so to speak, knowing a number of Charlotteans in advance. |

Also we have financial backing for 2 in Charlotte (it's just a matter of getting people trained to run their own business) I know the one in Gastonia would need help (especially with someone in the fitness industry) On Facebook, look up 1-life nutrition in Kings Mountain. Also I know someone who could get you on board with US Airways. |

Adding to the "fun" is that Democrats aren't angry like the folks who descended upon tampa. In all fairness , what I saw of the crowd outside of the venue in Tampa looked like they were having a great time and Tampa looked nice...
But it's nothing like the crowd in Charlotte. They really have created a very specific "here and now" atmosphere as if there could be no other place and no better time to be there. I'm sure that those who haven't spent much time down South will really love it there. The President will enjoy a bounce and so will Charlotte! |

I am not sure what you meant by the bolded statement since (aside from the quality of the public schools, and even that varies) nowadays most inner cities have the same exact amenities that the suburbs have.

Who cares if Winston Salem and Richmond have similarities. They do and they don't. I would say Richmond has more in common with Birmingham than any NC city. Who cares. Start a Richmond thread. BACK TO TOPIC. CHarlotte looked great at the DNC. Was downtown yesterday and was very impressed with how much effort the city put into it. Loved the Charlotte logos everywhere. There were people all over the streets, until the the brief heavy downpour. So proud of the Queen City this week. The convention was a major success.

In general, I'm not a big fan of the Queen City. But you guys did a hell of a job. I believe that no other city could have done it as well as you did. Thanks for making the New South look so new and so harmonious. You did the whole region proud!

There were things being said about Charlotte this past week that were practically unthinkable a decade or so ago, when I first moved here. The comments by Tampa's mayor were particularly complimentary.
