Houston solidifies ranking as fourth-largest U.S. city

Houston may soon have company among U.S. cities with a population of more than 1 million.

With a population of 967,487, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data analyzed by The Business Journals' On Numbers, San Jose, Calif., likely will be the next to join the club.

Houston's population was estimated at 2,145,146 as of July 2011, compared to 2,099,430 when the last Census was conducted in April 2010. That population growth — 2.18 percent — is the highest among the nation's five largest cities, the data shows.

Houston has solidified its ranking as the fourth-largest city in the nation. Dallas is ninth on the list of largest cities, with population of 1.22 million, followed by San Jose.
