They were built during earlier relocations, before the government decided Pudong was to become what it is now. Historically, Pudong had always been a backwater, accessible mostly by canoe-sized ferries; it was seen as a dumping ground of sorts at the time.

Pudong in 1990, ten years after economic reforms but before reconstruction has reached it.

I really doubt that. I'd say the burj will run late in the end, ie opening end of 2009. It's really amazing how quickly everything's been built though. Imagine if they keep going for another 15 years

No particular reason, I suppose. I never was big into Dutch football, but thought the avatar looked interesting. :p

ok, funny, you know the team is famous for its hooligans?

And that picture of Pudong wasn't that before 1990, I thought it was in the early 80's, and that in 1990 there was some construction going on there already...

No. It was in 1990 that the Special Economic Zone was established there. Therefore, this was a last glimpse of old days before construction hell broke loose.

burj dubai's so much taller than swfc (although swfc has a better and more crisp look to it). there's no way that it can beat swfc to completion now that swfc's construction's in full swing. i mean, 492m to 800+ m? burj dubai's gotta have a way-longer construction time.

I took this on June 3rd from the top of Jin Mao Tower:

My apologies for the poor angle. Jin Mao juts out just below the observation deck so this is the best view you can get.

It looks like Deng Xiaoping's leadership did a great job in making China a economic powerhouse.
