It's already over the setback, so nearly one-third up.

New Donnell Library to be housed in Baccarat New York

Starwood Capital CEO Barry Sternlicht and a rendering of the Baccarat

Quote:
The new incarnation of the Donnell Library on West 53rd Street will be housed at the base of Tribeca Associates and Starwood Capital’s Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York and will be a multi-functional but significantly smaller space, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Designed by TEN Arquitectos, the new $20 million space includes 144 amphitheater-style seats, a technology space and a children’s reading room and a 141-seat auditorium. The space reflects the shifting role of libraries and will be highly versatile, Anthony Marx, the library’s president and chief executive, told the Journal.

The New York Public Library intended to sell the MoMa-facing property in 2007 for $59 million to Orient-Express Hotels, which wanted to build a hotel there and committed to provide a replacement library space. But then the recession hit, and in 2011, Tribeca Associates and Barry Sternlicht’s Starwood Capital bought the site instead for $67.4 million.

The developers are now building the Baccarat, which will contain a high-end hotel and 61 luxury condominiums. They will also build a significantly compressed space for the library, covering 28,000 square feet as compared to its 97,000-square-foot predecessor. The library will also have 16,000 square feet of public space, just over half of what the old branch had.

“The primary lesson going forward is that we should avoid, if at all possible, closing any branch, let alone a much-used branch,” Marx told the Journal.
High-end luxury accomodations with an educational mission? We got 'em!

The facade on this is very plain - not sure what the dissonance is between renderings & final product but not looking good. More pics at link.

It's not the worst, but I expected blacker glass. I think once the black siding is installed, it'll look better.

I guess it comes down to the sides of the tower and that 'cool' tone for the cladding they revealed in the renderings. The fenestration is nothing to write home about, that's for sure. Even Gene Kaufman could do better.

No kidding. Verre is going to be effing HUGE from there. My favorite thing about Top of the Rock is feeling like you're up among the giants, mainly when you're on the South-facing side. BofA is so huge and comparatively close it feels like you could reach across and touch it. TV is going to be that on the CP side.

Heh, and then no one up there is going to even see poor Baccarat.

I want to see this picture again in four years...can you imagine the impact of 432? It will be almost exactly TWICE the height of the GM Building.
Not to mention 225 W 57!

Baccarat's Crystal Palace Gets Glassy On West 53rd Street

Quote:
The hotel portion of the 50-story Baccarat Hotel & Residences at 20 West 53rd Street now dons its sleek, dark glass exterior, a custom curtain wall created by the architects at Skidmore Owings & Merrill. Installation of the facade is now underway for the higher floors, which hold the 61 condos. The curtain wall system consists of "insulated glass units with a high performance low-E coating," and in some units, it encloses double-height living spaces with sliding glass doors that lead to outdoor terraces. The street-level facade features a three-story, 55-foot "multi-faceted glass panel system," pictured above.

I really like the dark/cladding for this. Wish NYC can make a super tall with dark glass.
