What about other design, such as furniture, instruments, etc anything else that Antwerp is design-active and savvy?

The city I most enjoyed to visit...and if you arrive by train is love at first sight with that stunning station
Shame I was only there for one day...must come back one day.

Thanks for the great photos

Nothing that specifically comes to mind in that area, no. There's another school in Belgium that does produce some design, in a rather surprising place and that's Genk, in the north-east of the country, a former coal-mining area - they also produced Belgium's most famous fashion designer of this time, Raf Simons, who left his position as creative director for Jill Sander to become artistic director for Dior

One perk Antwerp has is that it's the worlds biggest hub for trade in rough diamonds. Sadly that whole universe is locked up in a hideous office district just outside the Central Station and it doesn't seem to add much to the city life - apart from money.

Interesting to see what people think of Antwerpen. I went last summer and whilst I found parts of the city to be very beautiful, a lot of it was a rather messy and chaotic place. I don't mean this merely in terms of people or litter, probably the streetscapes more than anything. There were often lots of ugly and pleasant buildings side by side, creating quite jarring scenes, as if buildings had just been demolished and replaced without thought. I appreciate everywhere has this to an extent, but it seems somehow worse in Antwerpen (and indeed throughout the country).

The bike paths were a bit dodgy and dangerous in places too, certainly compared with NL, generally for no real reason.

I didn't dislike the place, but nor did I particularly love it.

Urbanism of the 60's and 70's ruined the otherwise prefect historical city centers in Belgium.

The bike paths are rapidly changing for the better. I think that of all major Belgian cities, Antwerp has, by far, the best bike paths. Like here, next to the Central Station: click!. If you look around on the same spot I guess you also get a pretty good illustration of that general messiness

Oh yes, no doubt the bike paths are better than elsewhere in Belgium (most places they don't seem to exist, or rarely?). What can I say? Many visits to the Netherlands (the place is rather too familiar now) has raised my standards to their level.

It has mostly been deliberate destruction then, joshsam. I thought as much, still interesting to hear.

I don't think there's any country in the world with a bike infrastructure that equals the Dutch. But I also think there aren't too many cities in Europe and the world that have a better bicycle infrastructure than Antwerp. Sure enough, all cities in the Netherlands and the likes of Copenhagen, but after that...

Yes, until not so long ago, people didn't care too much about the historicity of the town (like everywhere in Europe). But it could have been much worse, because they were planning to demolish large parts of the old town to make room for big boulevards and car parks. This is very well visible at the stadsschouwburg (modern theatre from the 1960s). Some streets were demolished to make place for a large square (the car park). Moreover, the building faces a large boulevard around the old centre and not the city centre itself. People were thus supposed to come to the theatre by car and not on foot from the centre. The square in front of the rubenshuis (Wapper ) was also meant to be a busy street. Luckily these developments stopped soon and today we generally take care of our heritage very well.

I must also add that Antwerp was (together with London) the major target for V-bombs in the last year of WW2, because of the strategic importance of its harbour. This has also caused a lot of damage, though I must admit that the post-war destruction was much worse.

Anyway, very nice pictures Kampflamm. I'm delighted that you visited my city and that you liked it. The photo's are magnificent! I only regret that you keep on comparing our Belgian cities to Dutch and German cities. There's no reason for that

I love the architecture in certain Belgian cities. It's just my style, and the detail seems very intricate. The large windows are my favourite feature, much like the architecture in Amsterdam (and other Dutch cities), or even Gdansk.
