Wow..... wonder if that will ever come back again

Kaliningrad is hopefully going to reconstruct that damn castle again, along with the Kneiphof and University.

There is so much tragedy on these threads. It is very moving. Sometimes I will read a post that is especially sad. 1960! Fifteen years after the war.

There was no end date within the communist ideology for destroying cultural and religious elements of conquered nations.

Parenthetically, the Plauen section of Dresden, on the southwest part of the city, was bombed in May of 1945, a month after the end of the war. The post war destruction started immediately...and continued onward for decades.

What to do with this?

That building that replaced Königsberg castle hosted the Soviets' house in other times. What is it used for currently?

Thanks for questioning. In fact, I was off by a couple weeks. The bombing of the Plauen suburb was April 17, 1945. While the official surrender was May 7, the April 17th raids were nonetheless far from any true military strategy, rather pure and utter vengeful destruction. These raids were carried out by the Americans. My original point was (parenthetically) that hostilities overall did not come to a screeching halt when victory was won.

Again...

No, the "Casa of Soviets" is not on the spot of the former Konigsberg castle, it is approx. 200 metres to the east. The remnants of castle were removed, but the dungeons and basements remained. I personally saw them in 2006, they're doing archeological research of some kind.

And IIRC the Soviet's House has been never finished and used for anything at all.

Aha. But if I see correctly the bombing took place on April 17th, so it took place during the time of war and therefore was completely legit, legal and sensible from the POV of military strategy, which was as follows: hit the Nazis until they come to their senses and surrender. And IIRC correctly the Americans didn't tend to destroy anything vengefully after the war was over. On the contrary: they engaged large amounts of money to provide the Germans with food, coal, medicines and all the other supplies.

Unless you know something that I don't

That is good news.

I assume it was a Lutheran Church.

They've reconstructed the tower and the roof, as you can see.....
Only wonder if they'll get the windows done too!

Originally it was catholic, then lutheran and now orthodox.

The reconstruction is not done yet. There are also about 200 fresco paintings inside the church which should be reconstructed.

Yes, it will be wonderful to have that church restored again.

200 fresco paintings! That would be beautiful.
